It’s October, which means Spy x Family is back! After a long hiatus (of three months), our favorite fake family has returned to our anime schedules. What better way to make a smashing return than to give us the usual antics?
To give you a refresher, Spy x Family centers around the fake Forger family. Agent Twilight is a spy for the WISE agency, a West Berlint agency that looks to maintain world peace from their country alone. In order to do that, Twilight must infiltrate a school to get close to the leader of the National Unity Party. He only appears at events for his son, so Twilight takes on the moniker of Loid Forger and adopts a daughter, Anya, and takes on a wife, Yor. Together, they are the fake family that will ensure world peace. Loid doesn’t know that his daughter is a telepath and that his wife is an assassin, but they solve crazy problems with their strange skills.
Spy x Family 1×13 introduces us to another member of the Forger family. Anya wants a dog after gaining a Stella Star, but no one realizes that she’s going to find the perfect one in the strangest way possible. This is anime after all, nothing will be normal.
NEW ORDER FOR LOID

Loid is called away to deal with an underground group functioning out of Berlint University. After faking a stomachache and confessing to taking a monster dump, he’s property of WISE once again. Only he’s gone for a long time and somehow Yor won’t question it. Boy, can she be dim. They have yet to confront each other about their very obvious hints to their other lives and Spy x Family 1×13 intends to keep it that way too. The family dynamic remains the strangest part of this series, keeping it wholesome and lighthearted. Well, not always lighthearted…
The students have a plan to plant bomb dogs throughout the city to cause disruption and start a war. It’s up to Loid to get one of the members to confess and give WISE all the information they need. Only while he’s not paying attention, Anya has managed to get herself embroiled with this group when she forms a bond with one of their dogs. The moment Anya and Bond (to be named in the series) meet is enough for a double take. He shares the image of her family with her because he recognizes her. Anya’s reaction alone is enough to take a guess as to what might happen in the future of this anime. Together, they will drive Loid and Yor insane, but also probably be the ones to save the world.
A DOG TO ADOPT

I knew Bond was coming from the preview we saw in the last cour of this anime, but it was so nice to finally see him in action. He’s a hero just like his future family and only wants to do what’s right. When he saved that young boy from almost being crushed, it was easy to tell that if Loid, Yor, or Anya needed him, he would be able to help in a heartbeat. Although he can a bit of a chicken at times. His “borfs” were adorable and if I could adopt him in a heartbeat I would. There’s a sense that perhaps Bond and Anya are more connected than we might think.
In Spy x Family 1×13, The Handler explains to Loid that the bomb dogs that are being set up are from “Project Apple.” This was a project that experimented on animals when the old government was in place. Instead of euthanizing the animals, they went to the pound and were snatched up by various people. Bond is definitely from Project Apple. Why would someone need a dog that can see the future though? How did they program him to know that was the future? It’s possible Anya was a part of an experiment with the old government too. Despite their adorable connection, this dog and the young lady are most likely experiments from the same group now let loose into the world.
A QUICK ESCAPE FROM THE BAD GUYS

Anya is still stuck on the idea of “Starlight Anya,” the girl who is going to get all the Stella Stars. She gets the impression that her dog is going to get her a star is a little strange, but it’s Anya, one of anime’s biggest dumbasses. Maybe one day she’ll get it in her head that she can’t actually save the world all the time. Leave that to her parents. But the chase was the best part of Spy x Family 1×13, showing that this anime never left. We’re going to get the same idiocy and action from this family, if not, even more than before.
It’s only added to when Yor freaks out that she can’t find Anya. She assumes that Anya is kidnapped and will be married off to her kidnapper. Maybe that’s why she’s great at being an assassin, Yor only has to kill someone and walk away. Leave the complex thinking to Loid. The cherry on top was seeing Yor appear out of nowhere and kick the crap out of the bad guy. She’s still Anya’s mother and will do anything to protect her… even if she doesn’t understand why. It’s the love that counts in this anime, people!
OVERALL THOUGHTS
- I assumed Bond was from WISE but it turned out he’s got a much darker past. This means I need to stop assuming things for this anime.
- Loid’s excuses + Anya’s antics + Yor’s single brain cell = Yup, Spy x Family is back.
- Bond is not only the dog that Forger family deserves but the one they need.
- I almost wish this episode didn’t end on some cliffhanger. The urge to read the manga is strong!
- Anya cursing is yet another reason why I love her.
