The first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered at a panel during NYCC 2022, and honestly…it’s kind of amazing.
Now, we will admit that Chris Pratt‘s voice is a letdown. We were hoping that he would go all the way and transform into the character that we know and love. Instead, it’s just Pratt with a hint of Italian. And it does speak of Nintendo and Illumination’s ignorance at the fact that we don’t need a huge celebrity to go to theaters and watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Mario is enough the way he is.
But besides the obvious misstep with Mario’s voice, everything else is perfect. Bowser looks absolutely badass and his entrance stood out immediately as, “THIS IS THE BAD GUY!” And don’t even get me started on the brave penguins. I love them and wish them well even though I know that things won’t go well for them. At least for now.
Then there’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie look. It’s bright, it’s fun, and it pops. No making Mario dark and gritty. Just pure fun and the trademark style that longtime fans have grown up loving. As for the gritty, that’s all for Mario’s bestie Luigi. Technically he was in the trailer for basically 2.5 seconds. But who cares! We got to see him doing his dark and spooky thing and that’s all that matters.
Conclusion: Someone is going to absolutely dub the entire The Super Mario Bros. Movie when it comes out. And we will watch it. But we can also admit that we’re probably going to spend money to go to the theater and watch our childhoods on the big screen even if it means listening to Christ Pratt for however long this movie is.
