Spy x Family 1×20 gets back to its regularly scheduled programming: Anya’s shenanigans. Yes, everything is on the line with Operation Strix, but now it’s up to Anya to make sure Loid can meet Desmond Donovan. Their meeting has already been spoiled for me thanks to social media. But, watching the events that happened before then has always been so much fun with this anime.
This week, Spy x Family takes us through Anya’s school project. She’s got to learn about a profession and report back. Obviously, the Forgers are forged so nothing she reports on is quite what it seems. Then we end up with one of the most hilarious episodes of the season.
YOR’S FANTASIES

Anya’s tasked with learning about a profession. While all her privileged classmates can just call up her parents, she knows that her parents aren’t conventional so it’ll be hard to report on them How is she meant to tell everyone that her father is a spy? Her mother has a regular job, right? But unfortunately, Yor lets her mind get the best of her.
Usually, Yor’s minor fantasies don’t showcase why and how she does her job. Despite the fact that this was a fantasy, it was pretty refreshing to see her be an assassin. I have spent months seeing people in Thorn Princess cosplay and feeling like it wasn’t Yor. The sweet mom figure who occasionally kicks ass is Yor Forger. Seeing her sweet personality and honor overlap with such a dangerous job was perfect. It made sense that to her everything is just a procedure and her everyday job. She explained a little too much, but it also has you wondering why she didn’t just take Anya to city hall with her.
PAGING DR. FORGER

When Yor’s profession proves to be too risky, Anya leans on her dad. Loid has lied this whole time about being a psychologist, but he actually takes Anya to a hospital where he is a “doctor.” Somehow no one suspects that he’s not really a medical professional because he’s so nice. Somehow he’s also trained in therapy techniques…? I’m starting to wonder how much has been put into Operation Strix and how expensive it is just for Loid to meet Desmond. But this part of the episode was the most enjoyable since Loid’s thoughts got in the way of what he was teaching Anya.
I was shocked to discover that Loid has an actual job. I assumed he just went to Anya’s school to keep an eye on her all day. But, he is an actual psychologist in the daytime. Why would he need that? Sure, he makes the case that he needs connections and that powerful people go to the hospital – but it doesn’t feel right. This part of Spy x Family 1×20 was fun because Anya was hilarious, but I’m wondering if all that time spent at the hospital could have actually been spent showing the assassin side of this anime.
TOP SECRET

Anime has such an influence on Anya, namely her favorite Spy Wars. She discovers a secret code in one of the episodes and copies it for everyone she knows. “Saturday 0800, meet me at the bridge,” is all they need to know. It was a treat in Spy x Family 1×20 to see her run around telling everyone she had a top secret message for them. Usually, we see Anya meddling in Loid’s spy life, but it was nice to see her just being a kid and a little mischievous. Of course, Franky is the only one to crack the code.
Oh Franky, get a life, will you? Love, your friendly neighborhood anime watcher. There’s no way in hell he can continue to be this gullible. If not, someone please find him a girlfriend, man is desperate and needs the ego boost! But the best part of this half of the episode was watching Anya be her silly childish self as usual. She usually gets herself involved in things she’s not supposed to for the sake of excitement and somehow loops Franky in. As an only child, I understand and still hoped she would trick more than one person. She did give the message to Damian after all. What if he attempted to meet her to see what was happening? I’m hoping for a new twist with them before this anime is over.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
- This episode was a HUGE improvement from the last episode.
- Finally, we got just a glimpse into Yor’s assassin life.
- They summarized Twilight’s mission like something really important was going to come up. I wonder if it will soon.
- I need more scenes with Dr. Forger, please!
- I was kind of hoping that Damian would crack the code, but the Franky twist was funny too.
