The official trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie just dropped and all eyes are on Anya Taylor-Joy‘s Princess Peach. Sure, Mario, Luigi, and Toad are there. And there were some sweet appearances featuring Donkey Kong, a bunch of Yoshi’s, a Cheep Chomp, and Koopa Troopa’s. But the internet couldn’t take their eyes off Princess Peach.
For the longest time, I’ve never cared for Peach. She looked like a baddie in her Fire Dress and motorcycle riding outfit. But she was often typecast in the damsel in distress position that Mario had to save. The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks to be shifting the narrative a little more by making Peach the hero of her own story who trains Mario to help her defeat Bowser and save her kingdom.
And I know that some are probably raging because they think the “woke feminist agenda” is responsible. But girls, teenagers, and women who have been part of this franchise…well, we deserve to be seen as the hero. No ifs, ands, or buts. Because like it or not, we have been part of this world from the very start. And we’re done with the damsel in distress.
Another important aspect of this transformation is that Princess Peach is still hyperfeminine. A lot of times the media doesn’t equate pink, pretty, and cute as able to RAISE ARMIES, TRAIN THE SOLDIERS, AND FACE HER ENEMIES! This Princess does that while looking absolutely fierce, wearing beautiful gowns, and definitely having a skin routine. The complexity matters.
As expected, the internet was alive with their love for all aspects of Princess Peach. I mean, who wouldn’t when she put on her suit, grabbed an ax, and decided to take on Bowser all by herself? Even I went from a casual Peach fan to “Yas queen slay! Slaaaay! SLAY YOUR ENEMIES!!! RULER OF THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM! SMITE DOWN THOSE THAT OPPOSE YOU!”
There were plenty that agreed that they were here for her girl boss energy.
Others were in absolute tears of joy at her in the Fire Dress. Which, same.
Some were shook that they gave her a personality. Which, she’s always had one but she hasn’t been given the deserved time and writing to let that part of her shine.
Others were living for her being down for colosseum duels.
There were those that wanted to remind people that our girl has always been a baddie. It hasn’t been as present in mainstream media when it comes to Peach. But it doesn’t take away the fact that there have been comics, shows, and games that put her in the position of power over her own destiny. And hopefully, this will guide people that didn’t know about that content, towards those pieces of media.
Some even went as far as creating art for Princess Peach as she is about to enter battle.
And one person even reminded us that if they went this hard on Princess Peach…IMAGINE WHEN DAISY COMES!
