Everyone’s favorite globe-trotting archaeologist is back! Indiana Jones 5 has been on the way for quite a while now, but finally, fans have a title, release date, and the first trailer.
And we’re ready for it!
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the full title of Indy’s fifth adventure, which has a nice ring to it. Of course, Harrison Ford is back to wear the iconic fedora in the lead role. Joining him is John Rhys-Davies returning as Sallah (yay!) and new cast members Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, and Antonio Banderas. Yep, Antonio Banderas. James Mangold takes directing duties.
As intriguing as the title and cast are, not much is known about the plot so far, except that the setting is 1960s New York City. There also seem to be a fair amount of flashbacks that play a significant part in the plot. Shots of these flashbacks in the trailer showcase the computer-generated de-aging technology used on Ford, and it’s impressive — some of the best results of that type of tech that we’ve seen so far.
Speaking of aging, the script seems to be addressing Indy’s years head-on. Ford is 80 now, after all. Indy comments to Sallah that his days of adventure are behind him. “Perhaps not,” Sallah responds.
But just because he’s getting older doesn’t mean he’s not still Indy. He still loves to punch Nazis in the face, complete with a satisfying crunch. And he still gets in way over his head. The final scene in the trailer shows Indy cracking his whip and telling a group of hostile people to get back, but then they all pull guns on him! There’s even another boulder, like in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark.
After all this, I only have one question: Where is Marion Ravenwood? Or maybe it’s Marion Jones now, since she and Indy married at the end of 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Marion is the only missing piece in Indiana Jones 5. Check out all the adventure in the trailer here:
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits theaters June 30, 2023.
