I’ve only had Polite Society for a day and already it’s my most anticipated movie of 2023. So much so that I had to go with the title above. Because how can such a badass trailer with talented actors and beautiful outfits be bad? (I know we’ve all been burned before by a good trailer but I’m trying to be optimistic here because this looks absolutely stunning.)
Polite Society comes from the mind behind We Are Lady Parts aka Nida Manzoor. That series pushed the boundaries of storytelling when it comes to Muslim and brown women. And Polite Society follows in its footsteps by telling the story of a pair of powerful sisters who will do anything for each other. On one side you have Ria Khan (Priya Kansara), the younger sister training in martial arts. And on the other side, you have Lena (Ritu Arya), the older sister who has seemingly found love and is set to be married.
From the official trailer, you can tell these two are inseparable. They train together, bug each other like sisters do, and are each other’s best friends. When Lena is seemingly in danger, Ria will do everything she can, even if it means pulling off one of the biggest wedding heists in disguise or in full wedding attire while she takes on the “evil” mother-in-law. And it works. All of it. And that’s especially true when you take into consideration that you don’t see women like this on our screens, be it small or theater size.
So, we will be seated when Polite Society comes out. That’s how we support innovative storytelling and how we tell the bigwigs who only care about money that we want more of this.
Read the synopsis below:
A merry mash-up of sisterly affection, parental disappointment and bold action, POLITE SOCIETY follows martial artist-in-training Ria Khan who believes she must save her older sister Lena from her impending marriage. After enlisting the help of her friends, Ria attempts to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists in the name of independence and sisterhood.
