Leave it to Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy to turn the city of Gotham awry with their love.
In the official trailer for Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special, Harley is all about making sure that she gives Ivy the best Valentine’s she’s ever had. After all, the first holiday with your partner is special. (Yes, I understand that it’s become a commercialized horror show. Stay with me here.) It’s an opportunity, like every other day of the year, to show your partner how much they mean to you. And while each person has their own method of doing just that, it still stands as just a sweet day to be with your loved one.
Of course, in this special Harley goes to obsessive lengths to secure the perfect day with things going horribly wrong. There’s also the fact that Harley made Ivy reach the big O so hard that she put a spell on everyone to have sex, because of Valentine’s Day horny magic? Either way, the horniness has risen in the city as Clayface finds love. We can’t forget Bane as he tries to impress an unexpected date too. And that’s just what we’ve seen in the trailer so far. There’s no doubt that the special will be even crazier. Especially as the two leads of the Harley Quinn series take another step in their relationship.
Personally, this special is kind of monumental for LGBTQ+ relationships in animation. As a card-carrying member, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen an adult show like this. One where the main couple is absolutely sapphic and they’re still causing trouble, beating up baddies/heroes, and causing boatloads of destruction. And they do this all at each other’s side while working on the changing dynamics of their relationship. It’s what representation looks like and normalizes our experiences without throwing random garbage in their way to tear them down or going the way of the Bury Your Gays trope.
That’s why I can’t wait to watch this special and why I need more Harlivy.
