The Last of Us has been renewed by HBO for season 2 and we are already terrified.
The beloved apocalyptic drama starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey has only released two episodes so far and it’s already one of the most critically acclaimed shows of 2023. With a 97% average critic score over on Rotten Tomatoes, it has won the hearts of gamers who have loved the game for years and new fans who are experiencing it all for the first time. It’s also received stellar ratings over on HBO and HBO Max and has climbed to 22 million viewers across all platforms.
Executive producer Neil Druckmann was quoted as saying, “I’m humbled, honored and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey.” He then went on to talk about the team he’s been working on when it comes to this collaboration, The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two!”
“I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey,” Mazin said about the renewal. “The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.” And due to the fact that Mazin has previously said he doesn’t like “filler,” there are high chances that season 2 will cover the second The Last of Us game. And we’re terrified.
Without giving much away, The Last of Us: Part 2 is just as emotionally taxing as the first part. It focuses on Ellie and her journey. Along the way, we meet some of the worst of the apocalypse but we also see moments of light with Ellie as she finds companionship and more. And in many ways, it honors the love and hope we all found in the first one while giving Ellie the time to shine as the lead. The rest is survival, pain, and so many tears. With it comes the thought of them recasting Ramsey and pulling a House of the Dragon.
And we’re not the only ones terrified but kind of excited for what’s to come.
Some were obviously in pain, knowing that what comes won’t change.
Others had their casting choices in mind.
And some were even hoping that season 2 trailer would honor the trailer for the second game.
Then there were some that were wondering what Pascal would do once he read the script.
Whatever may come for The Last of Us season 2, we will be seated. Until then, watch this video of Ramsey and Pascal getting to know each other a little better while being adorable.
The Last of Us is currently airing new episodes on Sundays on HBO.
