The official trailer for Love & Death is finally giving us what we want…more Elizabeth Olsen. Because sure, we loved her as the Scarlet Witch. But Olsen is more than a Marvel actress. She’s talent personified that knows how to handle drama, comedy, action, and more. And we’re ready to follow her wherever she goes, even if that means following her to the suburbs and an extramarital affair.
Based on the true story of Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore, it takes two churchgoing couples on a path to murder. This particular mini-series is inspired as well by the book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs. And Candy has been previously portrayed by Jessica Biel in the Hulu series Candy.
It’s important to note that even though we are excited for Olsen to try out something new, we’re torn on the continuous exploitation of murder for entertainment. And it begs the question, will Olsen be playing a version of Candy that we will end up sympathizing with? Or will she be portrayed as the woman who snapped and attacked her friend 41 times with an axe and claimed “self defense”?
We do not want to fall into the same cycle of bullshit that was the Jeffrey Dahmer documentary starring Evan Peters where people thought Dahmer was hot, innocent, and made fanedits. Murder isn’t cute. It will never be cute. And the only time we should explore stories such as these are when we’re exploring the human condition while not making excuses for them.
We’re hoping that Love & Death does that.
