A24 really is on a roll turning out movie after movie that looks and sounds interesting. Up next is You Hurt My Feelings starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. And I will admit, at first glance the synopsis is a tiny bit boring. A novelist who has doubts about her next novel, and who has her husband’s unwavering support, finds out that it’s all been a lie. A little white lie where he actually thinks differently about her book. But a white lie nonetheless.
This white lie throws her life for a loop. And again, looks a little basic on the surface. But when you sit down to really think about it, it stings. Imagine your partner, probably one of the people you trust most in your life, was lying about that one thing you had a doubt about. Now you’re wondering what else they have lied about, what that means about your relationship, and who you are. And digging into those feelings hurts, no matter what age you are.
Ultimately, You Hurt My Feelings feels like something we’ve all gone through grounded in the white lies we tell to keep the peace, calm fears, or settle things. Because we’re all guilty of doing this, whether with our loved ones, with friends, or even at work. Add the fact that this is an A24 project and Louis-Dreyfus is on board with the talent Tobias Menzies as her husband, and you’ve got a movie worth checking out.
