Shrek 5 is happening and for once, the internet isn’t divided.
The news came from the Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri. He sat down with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto for Variety to talk about The Super Mario Bros. Movie. And with that movie expected to make some big numbers in the box office when it hits theaters on April 5, 2023, it’s no surprise that Meledandri is thinking about his next step. Just so happens that the next step is Shrek 5.
According to Variety, Meledandri said that it was essential to get the core elements of what audiences loved about Shrek. After you get that taken care of, you’re then “ hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.” And even though there are no deals in place at the moment with OG’s Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, or Cameron Diaz, there’s something about this confirmation that it’s happening that makes you feel like a kid again.
Meledandri went on to say that negotiations are going well and that the cast is coming back. “Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.” Combine that with the enthusiasm from fans who grew up on Shrek and you’ve got a recipe for a blockbuster hit like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which made an approximated 442.5 million dollars.
Basically, Shrek 5 is a surefire way to make some money from new fans and introduce new ones to this one-of-a-kind world. And the internet reactions back that.
Some fans felt like the world was healing:
Others were already seated.
Others were ready to buy all the merchandise.
Some were just plain ol’ screaming at the thought of Shrek 5 happening.
Then there were the ones who celebrated how Shrek and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish are upgrading animation in 2023 and beyond.
Plenty were just living for all the content we were getting today.
