Oliver Queen is back in the first trailer for The Flash 9×09 and honestly…it’s kind of ehhh. After being the cornerstone of The CW, the network is winding down its Arrowverse world as a whole and trying to pick up on some of the nostalgia of what started it all. The problem is that this world has gotten so complicated that OG fans literally have no idea what’s going on unless they’ve kept watching The Flash.
In the TVLine exclusive trailer for 9×09, you see Barry attending a birthday party with all of his loved ones. For some reason, Diggle thinks it’s a good idea to give Barry the famed bow that belonged to Oliver. (Maybe he’ll put it on his wall?) And after a bunch of multiverse talk that we really wish we were all done with, Oliver appears and Barry hugs the hell out of him. Like seriously, he hugged him so tightly that Oliver asked him to let go.
And I understand honoring Oliver and where the Arrowverse started. But this part of the world is over, done-zo, and it leaves OG fans bothered as to what is going on and if Oliver is alive or something. Is Felicity going to return too? Also, why is Oliver trapped on that dreaded island? Punishment? Because this isn’t an illusion or a dream. It seems like the real Oliver Queen and I’m still bitter that he was killed when I was still obsessed with Arrow as a whole.
If anything, The Flash would do better at focusing on Barry’s relationship with his wife Iris West-Allen aka the big love of this show. Hell, I’d even take focusing more time on Iris and her relationship with her brother Wally West, who has also returned and is played by the lovely Keiynan Lonsdale. Because right now it’s giving desperation for nostalgia instead of giving this OTP and this show the ending they deserve.
