Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina star in Peacock’s Based on a True Story and honestly…it feels a little too real. The official trailer for this new series features Ava and Bartlett. Ava, who is absolutely like 7 people I know, is obsessed with true crime. And it’s not hard to believe considering how many networks and TV shows there are focusing on the nitty and gritty of our world. Her husband Bartlett isn’t too much into true crime and wonders if he’ll have any peace and rest when it comes to his wife’s obsession. Spoiler: he won’t.
When an opportunity comes their way to capitalize on a recent murder, they get embroiled in a crazy ride that isn’t too hard to believe, and start a podcast. That leads to actual victims and them trying to A) find the killer and B) bring them on their podcast to change their lives. And while I think it’s irresponsible to put this idea out there because people will actually do this, there are already people taking advantage of crimes for their own benefit. You know, besides the actual studios that make shows on actual true crime.
Just recently there was this guy on TikTok that swore up and down that he almost got kidnapped twice. He took that upon himself to start investigating so “this wouldn’t happen to other men.” Of course, true crime junkies were into it. That’s what happens on TikTok. Suddenly he had a following. But a curious thing happened when he used his new following to advertise an app. And then everything collapsed around him. So when I say that this isn’t hard to believe, it isn’t. People are doing it. And this show looks a little too real.
