I’m just going to say it, Bird Box Barcelona looks better than the 2018 original Bird Box. No tea, no shade to Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, and Trevante Rhodes. But the first movie felt like it stumbled a little under the weight of such a riveting and new concept. And it felt slow burn, like we couldn’t truly understand the monster lurking outside so they focused instead on the relationships. And Bird Box Barcelona is going to reap the benefits of already having an established world and push into new territory.
In the first official trailer, we get to meet Sebastian (Mario Casas) and his daughter Sofia (Naila Schuberth). When this mysterious force decimates the world population, he must do everything he can to make sure they survive. Along the way, he meets allies, one of them being a woman who seems to be a tourist and is played by the Barbarian star Georgina Campbell. And it’s curious to note that the trailer makes it seem like the story is about her when Sebastian is the lead. But we get that they’re trying to bank off star power and all that jazz.
But what makes Bird Box Barcelona look like it’s going to be better than the OG movie, besides already being part of an established world? The answer is the threat. Whatever decimated the world population and made it so people killed themselves…it’s evolved. And you get hints of that in the way that some people aren’t moved to kill themselves or the way that pieces of glass float in one scene. It feels like the mysterious threat is turning more aggressive because it’s noting that humans have figured it out.
This intelligence makes for an even more terrifying monster and makes Bird Box Barcelona stand out. Because when the threat is bigger, so will the risks, and what this father is willing to do for his child. And we can’t wait to watch it.
