For as much as I love Superman, I’m not looking forward to Superman: Legacy. And if these casting announcements are to be believed (Update: Deadline is saying that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan are the confirmed choices) the casting choices for the next version of Superman bland as fuck. No tea, no shade to the actors who could be playing Clark, Lois, or Lex Luther. But it feels like the same story told all over again with nothing new or fresh to make it interesting. And a part of me wishes that studios give this hero a break and not do another movie in the first place.
Looking at the casting it’s nothing inspiring to begin with. And I’m not asking for Superman to reinvent the wheel. I’m just asking for something that doesn’t look bland or isn’t the same actors that we usually see. And again, no shade to these actors. They’ve worked hard. But I would love to see new blood in Hollywood. I would like to see new stars given a chance to shine. Even more so, and like I mentioned in the last paragraph, I wish they would do something new.
Truly, how many Superman movies do we need? How many versions of Clark Kent do we need? How many versions of Batman do we need? How many versions of The Flash do we need? The list goes on and on. And we can’t forget Spider-Man too. It’s a continuous cycle of the same characters over and over. And I get it. People love Superman and what he stands for. But it’s so fucking disappointing that Batgirl couldn’t even stand to be released before was crushed by DC before they ramped up another Superman movie.
And I know that Hollywood is scared of taking risks. But all we are getting are reboots in sequels. It’s boring. Just like this casting. And sorry, not sorry, I’m not going to spend what little money I have going to the movie theater to watch the same characters doing the exact same thing over and over again. I’ll just wait until it comes out on whatever streaming service is popular this month. Because there is no innovation. There is no fresh breath of air where a hero that we’ve never seen before is getting time to shine.
