We all like numbers. They feel like validation. So the news that Barbie has passed one billion at the worldwide box office is pretty sweet for, well — most women and men who understand that the movie isn’t actually anti-men. The fact that this isn’t, you know, the majority of people watching the movie, and common sense and actual film comprehension is as low as it is shouldn’t be a surprise, but in some ways, it kinda is.
Or, at least, the way it manifests has been kinda head-scratching. The number of think pieces going omg women watch movies! we should make more movies aimed at them! would be laughable, if these people didn’t seem to be serious. Maybe next they’ll figure out women buy toys too!
But anyway, Barbie made a lot of money. If you feel like celebrating, go watch it a second time. We just might. Bonus points if you go dressed in pink and/or with a man who is Kenough and recognizes it. We can celebrate the good.
