Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes picks up several years after War for the Planet of the Apes. At the end of the 2017 film Caesar, who had carried The first three films, died. Now we’re exploring the kind of world that remained after his death. A world that is undoubtedly divided with the apes in power and the humans in hiding and living like the animals they treated apes like before they came into power. And the first teaser trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sets the stage for the next adventure and gives us a first glimpse at Freya Allan who is best known from The Witcher.
Like every kingdom, whether it be ape or human, this movie sees one ape rise above the rest. Described as a “tyrannical ape,” he is trying to build an empire that will undoubtedly see the humans exterminated. And it feels like a tale as old as time where one side gains power and becomes the evil they were trying to root out and that subjugated them in the first place. And from what we can tell from the first teaser trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Allan plays a human who encounters a young ape who is on his own journey to find out where he fits in amongst the apes and what kind of world he wants to create going forward.
Personally, it’s giving this young ape and Allan’s character are going to fall in love. Because if there’s anything that will redefine how characters think of each other (and a whole movie/TV show/or book) it’s love. It’s the uniting force that breaks down walls and unites people. It’s even more powerful when it’s forbidden love. When characters have to face adversities that shape them while still holding on to what they love about the other person, or ape in this instance, it has power.
The franchise is based on a novel by Pierre Boulle and this next installment will be directed by Wes Ball, best known for The Maze Runner trilogy starring Dylan O’Brien. The screenplay is by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison. And so far this iteration of movies has gained more than $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office. It acts as a reboot of the original series of films from 1968. And even though we know it’s impossible, we hope that Andy Serkis, who originally voiced Caesar, has some role to play in this. Even if it’s in those dreams that they mean ape played by Owen Teague, best known for Reptile and I See You, has in the teaser trailer.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes premieres in theaters on May 27, 2023.
