3 Body Problem is coming, and the genre-bending mystery series promises to both keep us on the edge of our seats and make us think. Sounds like a very good combination. The series, from creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, is inspired by the internationally celebrated novel “The Three-Body Problem” by Liu Cixin.
In the book, the first in a trilogy, Earth comes into contact with an alien civilization from a system where three sun-like stars orbit one another, resembling the three-body problem in orbital mechanics. The series, however, is more a mix of this sci-fi backstory and the mystery of what’s happening on Earth in both the past, the present, and the future.
Co-creator and Executive Producer Alexander Woo told Tudum: “What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen. What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species.”
