I’ll be the first to admit that when I saw the first trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire I wasn’t sold. It looked too dumb and like they spent 5 minutes on doing the CGI for the Baby Kong. But I was quick to judge. Way too quick. After all, I have given all the Fast & Furious movies a chance and enjoyed them. So why not Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire? The second official trailer for this movie proved that I was too hasty to throw this movie in the trash.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire isn’t going to win an Oscars. What it will win is the hearts of people who like shit shows where King Kong gets a robot- enhanced arm, making it look like we’re not too far off from a Monsterverse x Transformers crossover. And the more that I watch, the more I can tell that this movie is going to be a buddy comedy action adventure that makes zero sense but that I will defend till my dying breath like I’ve done with the Fast & Furious movies. Because no, a car making it to space doesn’t make sense. Neither does an Earth within our Earth. But it is guaranteed to make you go “What the actual fuck?!” at least 10 times. And that makes it worth experiencing.
Personally, I’m also down for King Kong to have two children. First he’s got the little girl from Skull Island that he’s bonded with. He’d protect her with his life. And now he’s got a little Baby Kong and a battle against some other vicious-looking gorilla. There’s no doubt in my heart that Kong is going to adopt this little fella. It’s going to happen. But let’s get back on track. Being a parent is hard. But if we could accept Godzilla’s hideous mini-me’s then I think we can give King Kong a chance with Baby Kong. And with that sweet robot arm thrown into the mix, we’ll be seated. Or at least I will be.
