Moritz Mohr‘s Boy Kills World looks absolutely ridiculous. But one look at Bill Skarsgård’s cheekbones, the muscles brought on by all that fighting and training, and the shy little smile he gives at one point in the official trailer…AND WE’RE SOLD! Skarsgård, known for movies like Barbarian for playing Pennywise in the It movies, plays Boy. He’s an orphaned young man in a post-apocalyptic world run by a modern dynasty. And like any good post-apocalyptic world, the Boy is after some good ol’ revenge after the matriarch of this family murders his family.
While watching the trailer for Boy Kills World, it becomes quickly apparent that this isn’t the same cookie-cutter post-apocalyptic movie. Since the Boy is deaf and voiceless (according to the synopsis), he needed a voice. And apparently, he used the voice based on a childhood video game. It just so happens that the voice is H. Jon Benjamin‘s aka Bob Belcher from Bob’s Burgers and Sterling Archer from Archer. So it’s kind of mindboggling to see Bill Skarsgård’s face and hear Bob Belcher as the action sequences get increasingly more complicated. But it works.
The only hesitation that we have about this movie is that it seemingly changed the narration for the theatrical release. Chris Bumbray over at JoBlo reported that they had watched the movie at TIFF. And during that screening, the Boy was voiced by Skarsgård, offering up a striking way to show the character’s emotions through his vocal performance. It could still work when the movie hits theaters. Surprises have happened. But even from the trailer below, it screams more humor than heart. That and a bunch of action. Ultimately, we’ll see how it does in theaters.
Read the synopsis below:
“Boy” vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy, the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf, and voiceless. Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting. As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.
