This week’s 9-1-1 focused on Bobby and his past. We saw glimpses of his childhood that, frankly, made us sad, but proud that he overcame so much to be the man we love today. “Step Nine” also gave us another week of Amir, and we learned more about his story. We review.

Rescuing Amir
At the beginning of “Step Nine”, Amir gives a speech at an AA meeting that clearly was meant to rattle Bobby. Amir was a victim of the fire that Bobby started back in Minnesota so Bobby feels like he needs to make amends with Amir. The problem is that Amir’s now in Jacumba. So what does Bobby do? He goes to Jacumba.
Even though Bobby was probably the last person Amir wanted to see, he was lucky that Bobby found him when he did. Amir was shot by the cartel and would have died without help. However, the path to being rescued was, of course, not easy. The two end up in a truck with a cartel member, crash the truck, and then Amir’s infection from the gunshot start to set in. Luckily, the two were rescued and are going to make it. We’re so relieved because we don’t know what we would have done if we lost Bobby. And we don’t think Bobby could have handled Amir dying.

Making Amends
While Amir and Bobby were waiting to be rescued, they discussed why Amir came to Los Angeles. He wanted to see what kind of man Bobby was. And he wanted to know how Bobby could be good after what happened. Of course, we know Bobby’s journey hasn’t been easy. He’s put in the work over these last 10 years to become a better person. And Athena was right – he isn’t the same person he was 10 years ago. But he still feels guilt for the fire and all the pain he caused.
We don’t expect Amir to understand. Or even forgive Bobby. That fire changed his life forever. And just because Bobby wanted to make amends doesn’t mean Amir has to forgive him. But we do think these two came to an understanding. Amir knows Bobby hasn’t forgotten about his victims. And we hope that they can keep moving forward.
Peter Krause and Malcolm-Jamal Warner were phenomenal in this episode. They played off each other so well. We would love to see Amir again in the future.

Glimpse of the Past
“Step Nine” had a lot of flashbacks to Bobby’s childhood. Bobby idolized his father. His dad was a firefighter and seemed perfect. At first. But as the episode went on, we learned that Bobby’s father had a lot of issues including being an alcoholic. Bobby’s brother and mom leave, but Bobby stays because his dad needs him. We really felt for Bobby as he really wanted to help his dad, but his dad needed more help than what he could give.
Near the end of the episode, Bobby’s dad has an accident in the house and dies suddenly. This obviously traumatizes Bobby and leads to him having a drink. These scenes helped us understand why he became an alcoholic which lead to him starting the fire in Minnesota.
We’re so glad he’s not that man anymore. He’s a good captain, husband, father figure, and friend. And we couldn’t imagine 9-1-1 without Bobby.
