We watch a lot of TV and movies! And we listen to a lot of music, podcasts, audiobooks…so yeah, we’re fangirling over a lot of things! Each week we come together to highlight all the feels they give us throughout the week. On these Fangirlish Feels of the Week, there are five categories and many thoughts! Ready?
Here we go!
What You’re Fangirling Over This Week
Amanda P.: The Tony Awards were full of moments that got me emotional (when Groff cries, we all cry!), but the biggest one for me was Shaina Taub’s dual wins for Best Score and Best Book for Suffs. Not only is Suffs a fantastic show, and Taub a wonderfully talented writer, but her dual wins in those specific categories meant a lot to me — that’s my dream as a lyricist and librettist, too.
Brittany: I’m joining Amanda in the Tonys boat. Jonathan Groff finally has a Tony Award! Plus Daniel Radcliffe and the well-deserved success of Merrily We Roll Along in multiple categories, but I have to single out Groff because that win was so long overdue and because it was clear how much that meant to him and to his legions of fans (myself included). It’s a very cool thing to see my hero finally get to the top of that mountain, and I’ll freely admit I yelled and then I cried.
Ashley T.: I’m especially hype over the new trailer we just got this week for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, as well as the key artwork! Anything that gets me more Janeway is okay by me.
Amanda W.: Like my fellow Amanda, I’m fangirling about Broadway, but not the Tony Awards — though Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe winning awards is certainly exciting. Moulin Rouge! The Musical announced its next Broadway Christian and Satine, and I’ve never been more excited about a Christian and Satine duo than Aaron Tveit and Joanna “JoJo” Levesque!
Both are reprising their roles and actually performed the musical opposite each other once last year, and now they’ll star in the show for 12 weeks starting July 23! Every time I think I don’t need to see Moulin Rouge! on Broadway again, I’m proven wrong.
Ashley W.: What Amanda W. said. I’ve been fortunate enough to see Aaron Tveit as Christian in Moulin Rouge! The Musical already, but I never got to see JoJo during her initial run as Satine. It made my 9-year-old self sad. So it’s incredibly exciting to find out she’ll be back on Broadway and will get to do an entire run with Broadway’s original Christian! Now, if only I had the money to afford to see it.
Rachel: Inside Out 2 was a great time at the movies for me this week. The original was pretty much an animated masterpiece and the sequel was almost as good.
Shana: I am, once again, here to tell you I screamed when Lestat showed up at the end of Interview with the Vampire 2×06. I’m beyond thrilled the TV gods heard me begging for the series to honor that part of book canon. And yet, even after all that begging, the big reveal was so good, it still shocked me. Well done.
WTF Moment of the Week
Amanda P.: Every time I think certain corners of the galaxy-far-far-away fandom can’t sink any lower, they prove me wrong. It isn’t fun to be a fan when simply liking something that others don’t, or being okay with tweaks or additions to canon, risks getting you harassed in the most horrible of ways.
Ashley T.: What Amanda P. Said. James Burns put it well this week on Jedi News. We have to do better.
Ashley W.: The news of The Heart of Rock and Roll, the jukebox musical featuring Huey Lewis and the News songs, closing on Broadway isn’t all that surprising. It had been struggling to sell tickets and was always near the bottom of Broadway’s weeky grosses. But to find out they posted their closing notice a mere five days before ending their Broadway run made me cry.
Selfishly, I’m upset because I’ll be missing out on seeing the show by one performance. But, the actual important part, a company of talented individuals will be losing their jobs and won’t get to bring unabashed fun and joy to Broadway anymore. I just know that, if given the chance, more people would have come to love and enjoy this rom-com musical of pure feel-good entertainment.
Rachel: We lost the incredibly talented Donald Sutherland this week. No words for this one.
Jasmine: Thursdays episode of General Hospital. It worked my nerves because Tabyana Ali who plays Trina Robinson, one half of my favorite ship Sprina, was in the episode and was mostly in the back and not heard from except maybe two times and it was filler dialogue. The show has her on like a day player when this time last year she had meatier material and wasn’t given throwaway lines. It’s so frustrating to watch.
Shana: Tyler Green, you really interrupted a Jemily moment — or, at least, what should have been one. That’s two ships you’ve cockblocked now, pal.
What We’re Listening to This Week
Ashley T.: It’s time for my monthly re-listen of HAIM’s Women in Music Pt. III. Never gets old, but I’m still eagerly awaiting news of their next album. According to their Instagram they’re still “writing…writing…writing.” I’m over here eagerly awaiting an update.
Brittany: I had the Merrily We Roll Along cast recording on while writing my Tonys article. It amazed me how many of the songs I still have memorized and was smiling or sniffling along with. Daniel Radcliffe’s version of “Good Thing Going” always gets me teared up and “Our Time” has me full on-sobbing.
Amanda W.: Sabrina Carpenter released a few new versions of her latest hit, “Espresso,” so those are joining my on-repeat playlist. Following the recent music video release of “The Boy is Mine,” which features cameos from Brandy and Monica, Ariana Grande released a remix of the song with the duo on the track, which is nostalgic, fun, and a great listen.
Ashley W.: At first, I was listening to The Heart of Rock and Roll Broadway cast album on repeat to help with my excitement of seeing the show soon. Now, each listen has become my way of coping with the show’s closing — and the lone way I’ll get to experience the Broadway production.
Jasmine: I feel like all my faves are throwing music out faster than I can keep up with. PVRIS just released a new song with Lights called ‘The Blob’ and I’ve had it on repeat. And now Kehlani has released her album Crash. I haven’t listened to it yet but it is going to be in rotation this weekend.
Shana: Katja Herbers singing “Sodomy” in Evil‘s latest episode. When’s the full album dropping????
What We Rewatched This Week
Ashley T.: I revisited She-Hulk this week because I was invited to talk about the series on the Creepy and Geeky podcast. It made me so grateful that we got Tatiana Maslany as our leading lady for that series and the great work Jessica Gao and the writing/directorial team did to adapt my favorite green gal for TV.
As with any genre property these days that might not be directly marketed to men, it got pooped on before it got a chance to reach its target audience, which is a real shame. I’ll forever defend the show. If you’ve not seen it, get thee to Disney+ and enjoy it.
Ashley W.: Four years have passed since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 7×04: “Out of the Past,” and one of the best parts about it is how it’s film noir. Set in 1955, the episode isn’t just in black and white to simply fit the theme.
They brilliantly work into the story why this particular episode is in black and white. It remains one of my favorites of the entire Marvel series — and I’m not just saying that because Enver Gjokaj’s Daniel Sousa in film noir is perfection.
Rachel: Bridgerton season 3 of course. Yes, still.
Badass Character of the Week
Raquel: He isn’t a fictional character but Donald Sutherland was a badass throughout his life, always fighting against injustice and staying on the right side of history. May he rest in peace.
Ashley T.: Any female leads in a sci-fi show or film right now are making my badass list this week. You will find yourself berated by incel man-children online, making so much noise that your real audience may struggle to find you. Keep showing up. We need you.
Brittany: I don’t know how I didn’t mention him earlier, but former Tulsa Homicide detective Justin Ritter. Occasionally, The First 48 will air cases that happened years earlier (normally for legal or production reasons that held them up), and that’s what happened recently with “Complex Terror.”
Audiences got to see Ritter again even though he departed the unit and is now a Lieutenant with Tulsa Robbery. And that episode affirmed how much Justin Ritter brought to The First 48. I’ve been debating with myself all week if he can be called the GOAT of the show. Justin, you were very missed, and still are very appreciated.
Shana: Evil‘s Father David Acosta, wielder of holy water and survivor of walking down an airplane aisle during intense demonic-relic-induced turbulence. The only priest I’ll ever trust.
