We still know very little about NCIS: Origins. Granted, we know it’s a prequel to NCIS and that it is set to follow a young Gibbs right after the death of his wife and daughter, but that only gives us a timeframe. It doesn’t actually give us all that much information. That might just be the point! We don’t actually know this Gibbs. We know the man from NCIS. We know who Gibbs will become. But what informs the man we will meet all those years later? Well, NCIS: Origins is set to tell us just that.
And all the teases have been pretty much about how little we don’t know, too! Well, that and about things long-time fans of the show already kinda figured. EW’s Fall Preview, for example, had a tease from Austin Stowell, who is playing young Gibbs himself, and what Stowell had to say pretty much reinforced the moment in time we find Gibbs: “The Gibbs that we find in our show — it’s not the guy that the fans are used to,” Stowell told EW. “This is someone who’s going through a lot of pain. He’s suffered a tremendous tragedy just four months before we pick up this show, and there’s a lot of newness in his life. There’s lots of firsts going on right now.”
Not much, no. Just a timeframe. But it is a different vibe than we expected.
I’ll be the first to say I wasn’t all that sold on this show. I wasn’t sure we needed it. And then, the cast was announced, including Harmon as the narrator, which doesn’t hurt. Then I got to talk to them. Then I got to visit the set. And now, well …I’m more than cautiously optimistic, I’m almost excited about what this show can be. And that’s about 5% about Gibbs, who I’ve always liked. So there’s that!
So, information? Not that much. But we have cast pictures now. And they’re giving 90s vibes. They’re giving we’re going to love these women. We already love them. We might like the men. And they’re giving let’s put cynicism in the backburner for a bit and see what this is bringing.
