Everything We Know About ‘Shrinking’ Season 2

Woof! There’s still over a month until Apple TV+’s comedy series Shrinking Season 2 premieres. In the meantime, we’ve gathered all the information about the upcoming season. From casting news to plot teases, it’s all here ahead of Shrinking’s return with a two-episode season premiere on Wednesday, October 16, on Apple TV+. New episodes of the comedy series’ 12-episode season will stream weekly until the season finale on December 25, 2024.

Created by Emmy Award-winners Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein and starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, Shrinking follows Segel as Jimmy, “a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own.” The show’s debut season also starred Emmy Award nominees Christa Miller and Jessica Williams, as well as Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.

Apple TV+ shared a teaser and first-look photos of the returning cast members.

McGinley shared a sneak peek at the upcoming season in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb in March 2024:

“Well, so we’re right now [shooting] in the fifth show, and of course, I can’t tell you anything, but [my character] Derek is going to have a little more to do. It’s going to be fun… funny. There are a lot of crazy storylines, and I think it’ll be compelling television. I will say going to work every day is just an absolute pleasure. I can’t wait to go to the set. You don’t get that every day on different shows, even though I’m really good at that. I will always find a reason to enjoy a job and a certain group of people within that space.”

Shrinking Season 2 taking on “a lot of crazy storylines” is expected, considering how Season 1 ends. The ten-episode first season concluded with Shrinking Season 1, Episode 10 “Closure,” on Friday, March 24, 2023, and saw Jimmy’s patient Grace (Heidi Gardner) boop – or push – her abusive husband off a cliff.

Elsewhere, in happier and less deadly news, Urie’s Brian married Charlie, Miller’s Liz told Tennie’s Sean that she wanted to be more than an investor in his business, Ford’s Paul made more of an effort with his daughter and grandson, and Williams’ Gaby appears to develop feelings for Jimmy – beyond him being the “safe” option.

While the plot of Shrinking Season 2 is under wraps, it will surely deal with the fallout of that Season 1 finale. It will also see Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein join the series as a special guest star, as announced in March 2024. Any details about his role are also unannounced. Additionally, Deadline exclusively reported in June 2024 that Ashley Nicole Black, who also wrote for Ted Lasso, has joined Season 2 as a writer and a new cast member.

The new Season 2 trailer sees Paul encourage Jimmy “to stick to conventional therapy and try and be normal,” which is good advice after what happened with Grace and her husband. The new footage also finds Grace in jail after pushing her husband off the cliff, with Jimmy and Brian visiting her. Shrinking‘s trailer also shows progress with Sean’s food truck, Alice worrying about her dad, and a beard-less Brett Goldstein in his unnamed role.

Apple TV+ renewed the comedy series for its sophomore season amid its debut season in March 2023. “We have loved the engaging, touching and hilarious world of Shrinking since the beginning, and it has been wonderful to watch as audiences around the world continue to connect with these big-hearted characters,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “We can’t wait for viewers to experience what the cast and creative team have for season two,” Cherniss added.

Shrinking is produced for Apple TV+ by Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence and Goldstein are under overall deals and Lawrence’s Doozer Productions. Lawrence, Segel, Goldstein, Neil Goldman, James Ponsoldt, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, Randall Winston, Annie Mebane, Rachna Fruchbom, and Brian Gallivan executive produce the series.
