There is no shame in life in taking big swings. Sometimes taking a big swing will pay off and sometimes it will make you wonder what the hell people are thinking. Rarely does it meet in the middle – where it is so bad that you suffer from secondhand embarrassment.
The Christmas Charade is one of those rare moments.
Hallmark definitely is taking big swings this Countdown to Christmas season and so far they aren’t the worst thing in the world. They are keeping the viewers on their toes, wondering exactly what we’re watching or enjoying every single moment. The Christmas Charade was a who green lit this, why did they do it, and can I get the 84 minutes of my life back that I wasted watching this one, though?
The movies premise, “Facing another dull Christmas alone, sparks fly when a risk-averse librarian accidentally gets wrapped up with a grinchy FBI agent in an undercover mission to save the Heart of Christmas.”

Now, whoever wrote that deserves an award, because they do make it seem interesting, only the Heart of Christmas is a necklace and it’s more like a mystery set at Christmas than anything that felt like it was giving you the holiday spirit.
Now, before you yell at me, I do not mean to be a Scrooge. However, that being said, one thing that I am not loving this Countdown to Christmas weekend is that I am feeling no Christmas cheer. Instead, I’ve been left sad, depressed, and thinking that life is really boring.
I know that it’s not even Halloween and I need to take it slow. I don’t think you should blame me for this though, blame Hallmark for starting Countdown to Christmas this early and evoking the idea in my head that it’s time to start feeling the cheer.
In the movie, Rachel Skarsten plays Whitney. She’s a librarian and her life is very boring. She’s set in a routine, afraid of change, and was raised to think of the risk in everything. She didn’t live – she existed – and she hated that. She wanted adventure and no one can blame her for that.
She simply agrees to go on a blind date and the guy says he’s going to be wearing a green sweater. Only, it’s Christmas and everyone seems to be wearing a green sweater. She sits with a man, who turns out to be an FBI agent. Because things can go really bad with his case, he talks her into staying.
Corey Sevier, who plays the FBI Agent Josh, is grumpy and alone. His life is his job and he doesn’t want to have complications. Whitney is a complication.
Josh isn’t used to having anyone looking over his shoulder or having anyone challenge him when he says no. But Whitney does just that without thinking. She is excited for the adventure that she is having.

As with all movies, you’re going to need to suspend belief when watching this movie. There’s the whole FBI letting a civilian become involved with a case and putting her in danger – acting like an agent. It didn’t make sense, but it was a good ploy to get the two together.
I wanted to love this movie because I love taking big swings. But the the thing about this one, is it just felt like a normal movie with a Christmas ball and a necklace named after Christmas thrown in. And because of that, I just kept losing interest more and more.
I think that when it comes to Countdown to Christmas, there has to be a feeling of the holidays in there. When that is missing or comes so secondary, it feels like a waste of time. I want to feel joy, not question my existence and wonder if my life is so boring that I should solve something. Not that there is anything specifically for me to solve.
I hate to say it, but I laughed so hard when there was the necklace that they were trying to stop from getting stolen, got stolen. I laughed because when we found out who Whitney’s parents were – I threw my hands in the air and was like, well that tracks. But what that is – you’d need to watch for.
The Christmas Charade wasn’t anything that kept me interested and something I definitely could have gone without. However, I tried and it wasn’t for me. Regardless of the Die Hard wannabe moments, it definitely wasn’t for me.

I adored this movie! 🙂
I really wish that I did. I love most of the Countdown to Christmas movies and I love the leads in this one. I just couldn’t get into this movie no matter how hard I tried.
