Boston Celtics fans, HBO has a documentary series all about the 18-time National Basketball Association (NBA) champion coming soon. Celtics City is an all-new docuseries from HBO Sports Documentaries, Ringer Films, and Words + Pictures. It will examine “the history, cultural impact, and extraordinary tale of the NBA’s winningest and most storied franchise,” per its logline. Emmy Award-winner Lauren Stowell is directing Celtics City, which is currently in production and expected to premiere on HBO and stream on Max in 2025.
“The Celtics are more than a basketball team. They’re a symbol of resilience, unity, and success. While chapters of the team’s story have been told, the full scope of their cultural impact has never been fully explored. Making this documentary was an incredible opportunity to delve into generations of legendary personalities, defining struggles, and extraordinary triumphs that have left a lasting mark not only on the game of basketball, but on the city of Boston and the spirit of America,” Lauren Stowell shared.

Fans and newcomers alike will get to know the current 2024 NBA Champion through “extensive, never-before-seen archives and more than 80 interviews of past and present Boston Celtics legends – from Bob Cousy and Larry Bird to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.”

Celtics City will reunite executive producers Bill Simmons and Connor Schell after they co-created the iconic series 30 for 30, which debuted in 2009.

“There’s no story quite like the Boston Celtics. Everything went right for 40 years, then nothing went right, then suddenly, things started going right again. But beyond the 18 titles and all the legends and memories, the team’s connection to the city and almost a century of American history was the most compelling piece for us. This story is bigger than basketball, and yet, it’s everything you ever loved about basketball, too,” Bill Simmons said.
The news about Celtics City also comes on the heels of another sports docuseries announcement. Last month, HBO Sports Documentaries and Park Stories, in association with the U.S. Soccer Federation and the U.S. National Soccer Team Players Association, announced a series about the United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT). The untitled series follows the team, led by renowned manager Mauricio Pochettino, in the four-year leadup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It’s expected to air on HBO and stream on Max in 2026.
