This week’s 9-1-1: Lone Star had two major stories: Tommy having surgery and starting her cancer treatment, and TK celebrating his 30th birthday. While these stories were wildly different, they both focused on family and how everyone needs a support system. “Kiddos” also introduced us to Enzo, TK’s stepfather. We review:

Family. It’s a Kick in the Pants.
Oh, family. As Judd said, sometimes it’s a kick in the pants. It definitely was for Owen this week when Enzo showed up unexpectedly. Not only did Enzo give TK his dream car (well, almost his dream car. It wasn’t red), but after an unfortunate arm-wrestling incident, Owen learns that TK became a first responder because of Enzo. Not Owen.
After witnessing a man almost lose his life to make his future stepdaughter happy, Owen realizes that Enzo is important to TK. We get that dealing with Enzo isn’t the easiest thing in the world for Owen, but we’re proud of him for putting his feelings aside, or at least trying to, for TK’s sake. We also think 9-1-1: Lone Star did a good job of showing that you don’t have to share DNA with someone for them to be family. A stepparent can be very important in a child’s life.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly at TK’s party. At least until the feds showed up to arrest Enzo for wire fraud and a bunch of other crimes. And they took TK’s car with them. So, it turns out that Owen was kind of right with how he felt about Enzo. But he was also right with what he told TK: most of us have both good and bad in us. Yes, Enzo committed those crimes, but he was also very important to TK. Both of those things can be true at the same time. Owen showed a lot of maturity and growth in “Kiddos.” We’re proud of him for being there for TK.

A Change in Captain
Tommy meets with her doctor at the beginning of “Kiddos” and decides to have the lumpectomy she needs for her cancer the next day. She also decides not to take any time off and help fix her daughter’s costume for the upcoming dance recital. Nancy urges Tommy to consider taking time off, but Tommy thinks she’ll be fine because it’s “an outpatient procedure.” This seems like it will end well.
After having the surgery and working a shift, she stays up late mending the dance costume, and Tommy collapses. Her girls call 9-1-1 and end up saving her life with Wyatt’s help. Those poor girls. They must have been so scared. Especially since they didn’t know why their mom collapsed.
Tommy was lucky that the blood clot didn’t kill her. But it makes her realize she has a huge fight ahead of her, and she can’t fight cancer with one hand tied behind her back. She decides to step away from the 126 and names Nancy acting captain. We know how hard this must have been for Tommy, but her life is on the line here. She needs to focus on her fight against cancer. The 126 will be there when she’s ready to come back. But for now, it’s in good hands with Nancy.
We’re also relieved that Tommy told Judd about her cancer. Judd will definitely take care of her, and the girls, during her treatment. Tommy can’t fight this alone, and we know Judd will be her biggest advocate.

Other Thoughts:
- Wyatt has really grown this season as a 9-1-1 operator. He could definitely relate to the woman in the first call, and he stayed calm. He also knew that his dad would be the best person to take care of Tommy’s daughters and had Judd meet them at the hospital.
- Enzo’s probably going to be busy dealing with his legal issues so we doubt we’ll see him again. But it was fun having Henry Ian Cusick on the show.
- Maybe Owen should get TK another birthday gift. Since those driving gloves are useless now.
