Few things top a ship that’s born from a rescue, angst, and forced proximity. As far as genres go, The Night Agent is far from a romance, but it’s simultaneously one of the few shows that’s excelled at delivering some of the best romantic moments, both in its first season and its sophomore run, making Rose Larkin and Peter Sutherland one of the best on-screen pairs we’ve had in a long time. The genre, like many action procedurals makes it hard to trust the guarantee of a true endgame, but the quality content we get for the couple makes it gripping to watch still.
From the moment the two of them meet in the show’s pilot episode, it’s all about protecting Rose, essentially making her the heart of the series. Slowly and then all once, she becomes Peter’s entire heart, too—his everything if we take his literal words from the Season 2 finale into consideration. She’s the only person who can find him, and she’s the one person he’d go to great lengths to protect—kindred spirits in every way, bound by trauma but connected through their choices to take care of each other.
MORE: The Night Agent Season 2 Review

A large part of the reason why ships like this remain memorable is because when the stakes are high, the tension between the couple is often tested. And thus, when they survive whatever hardship comes their way, it makes rooting for them that much easier. Whether it’s helping one another bandage a wound or holding their hand while everything else falls apart, these types of romantic relationships always provide a myriad of feelings with a single scene. They also often utilize some of the best romance tropes like hurt/comfort, the first kiss after a heated, life-threatening moment, and the angsty “don’t forget about me” goodbye that’s both hopeful and heartbreaking simultaneously.
From their deeply moving hugs to their first kiss, every moment between Peter and Rose on The Night Agent is full of depth, layers, and exceptional performances from Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan that elevate each of their scenes and evoke all the emotions for fans to cling to. There’s a reason no one wants to believe it’s the end for them, and that’s because ships like this hit hard and close to home. They leave a mark, they give us A+ content to make fan videos with and appreciate while we wait for the next glorious fanfic to update.
