Apple TV+ has just announced a new romantic comedy series titled PROGIDIES led by Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri and SAG winner Will Sharpe. As long-time fans of Ayo, we look forward to seeing her shine in a heartfelt and comedic lead role in a genre she’s never tried before. She’ll be able to sharpen her senses in a character that’ll display the real-life struggle of navigating love and relationships while staying true to her roots of comedy.
This could be her chance to connect with a character’s vulnerability, something she’s never been able to do before. There isn’t an emotion more complicated and thought-provoking than love. Choosing to follow your heart is one of the hardest choices we’ll ever have to make as human beings. PROGIDIES will have two people questioning if they’ve found forever in the other person.
Ayo Edebiri will showcase her talent in playing Didi. A woman in a relationship where both people are wondering if holding onto each other for the sake of comfort is a good thing. Problems arise when the uncertainty begins to choke both her and Sharpe’s Ren as their lives quiet down.
Synopsis
Didi (Edebiri) and Ren (Sharpe) are two ex-child prodigies who have been together since they were children. Now in their early thirties, they are starting to question whether their very ordinary existence is living up to the extraordinary promise of their childhood. Inevitably, they find themselves asking the same questions of their relationships. As individual hopes and needs feed into and conflict their shared lives, the series challenges the fallacy at the heart of the romantic storytelling – that the tale is over when the heroes get together. In life, surely, that is just the beginning.

The show’s premise is a direct opposition to her beloved character Sydney in The Bear. A show that encompasses the pressure of an ensemble running a restaurant with sprinkles of personal moments. Here, it looks like we’re getting deeper and more personal with Didi and Ren. Ayo Edebiri has indeed tapped into vulnerability before while playing Sydney. She knows how to express this raw delivery to captivate audiences. It’s normal for her to act as if a camera isn’t there because to us, she’s that good at expression. But we’ll get to see her in a character that more of us can relate to. Didi can be any one of us trying to start hard conversations with the person we love.
PROGIDIES was created, written, and will be directed by Sharpe, known for starring in White Lotus and the 2025 Oscar-nominated A Real Pain. Joining him and Edebiri as executive producers are Jane Featherstone (Black Doves), Naomi De Pear (This Is Going To Hurt), and Katie Carpenter (Flowers) under their company SISTER.
