The more things change, the more they stay the same. NCIS: Tony & Ziva is bringing back two fan favorite characters from NCIS: Ziva David and Tony DiNozzo. Considering this and the release schedule for the two shows, it begs the question: is a crossover coming? And, if not, could we get one in the future?
CBS announced that NCIS would be returning with a new season on Tuesday, October 14. NCIS: Tony & Ziva, meanwhile, is premiering with new episodes on September 4th, with the season slated to run until October 23rd. That means that, for two weeks, there will be an episode of both NCIS and NCIS: Tony & Ziva on, albeit on different platforms. NCIS airs on CBS, while NCIS: Tony & Ziva will be available on Paramount+.
But does that mean a crossover will happen sometime in those two weeks? Or, at the very least, that one might happen in the future?
Are we getting a NCIS and NCIS: Tony & Ziva crossover?
“I can tell you because of the timeline — we are on a network production schedule and they are on a streaming much longer term, dates aren’t necessarily set yet, production dates — it was very difficult for us to do something like that where we were able to set something up for Tony & Ziva,” NCIS executive producer Steven D. Binder told TV Insider while discussing the mothership’s Season 22 finale. “Now that it’s been shot, I would love to. I think that would be great.”
But that’s not all he said. “I am speaking without authority to speak for the studio and network, how they would feel about that, but they tend to be very pro-crossover stuff. So now that we actually have some stuff in the can, we definitely want to take a look at that. It’d be fun, it’d be good for them, I’m sure fun for the audiences. There’s no reason to not do it unless there’s a reason to not do it that I’m not aware of. But like I said, I’m just speaking for me as the writer of this show and you’re asking a question that involves a supervisor above me to adjudicate us. But I will tell you, I talk to Michael a lot. We’ve talked about Tony and Ziva over the years a lot, and I can tell you all the pieces are in play for something like that to happen.”
Pretty positive stuff, right?
Now, of course, considering the schedule issue he talked about, we likely won’t see a full-on crossover in this season of NCIS: Tony & Ziva, and no other seasons have been announced. But we have a good feeling about this show’s longevity. And we also have a good feeling about the show giving us the breadcrumbs to a possible NCIS return. And hey, maybe we can get a mini crossover? Perhaps they need the kind of help that requires calling an old friend? Just saying, Brian Dietzen, who plays Jimmy Palmer on NCIS, is moderating the show’s panel at SDCC.
Here’s to that long-awaited crossover coming true sooner rather than later.
