And Just Like That… Season 3 is about to put an end to the adventures of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte, for good this time. And we’re not sad, not at all. Relieved would be a better description. And that’s not a very normal feeling when it comes to saying goodbye to a show.
According to Deadline, the series’s showrunner, Michael Patrick King, knew for a long time that there wouldn’t be any more adventures in New York for the three friends. That was the reason they decided to extend the episode order from 10 to 12 and turn the final two into the special farewell that Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte deserve.
Sex and the City was one of those shows that left its mark on us in one way or another. And it wasn’t easy accepting its end. So when HBO Max put And Just Like That… on the table, we were happy to reconnect with Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. We were happy to find out what had become of their lives all these years and where they were now.
But And Just Like That… was a disappointment. The way the characters ended their story in Sex and the City and the characters we meet in this sequel never quite meshed. In any way. Not in how they acted, or the decisions they made… nothing. It’s as if the sequel took us back to the beginning and dedicated itself to ruining the good memories of our childhood.
We suppose it’s a gamble. When you make a sequel, you always run the risk that the new story won’t live up to the original, that it won’t even come close to matching the memories of the millions of people who felt a part of the characters’ lives. You even run the risk of it hurting your legacy, in some way. It could, of course, also turn out very well, and the new story will be the perfect continuation. But the odds are 50-50. And Just Like That… was a risky bet, and it ended up not being a good one.
So yes, we’ll admit we’re both happy and relieved that it’s finally over and HBO Max is putting it out of its misery. And us with it.
And Just Like That… Season 3 is currently airing Fridays on HBO Max.
