AI is a bad, bad boy. That’s an observation I think that we all know and are okay with saying. You see, I have long been afraid of AI starting to feel things and code itself, and apparently, take over the world. The series finale of Upload is a cautionary tale about what AI can be and how we need to be cautious with it.
AI has made its way to the real world.
Real Nathan is dying
Lakeview is being wiped.
When I wondered how they would tie up the series, because I felt like there was too much there. However, the writers did manage to wrap up the series. Is it how I would have thought? No. But was it a good ending? Yes,
And also a terrifying one.
HERE’S THE THING ABOUT NATHAN & NORA
When you think of love, one of the best examples would be Nathan and Nora. Yes, the whole falling in love with a guy who is dead and then downloaded into a clone of his body? Absolutely. But suspend that for a minute, and what you’ll see is that these two are so pure and innocent – it’s adorable.
What I didn’t expect was that after being reunited, they would experience the greatest heartache of all – losing each other forever. But I will also be happy that they had their time. I will be happy that his last moments were spent with her. She got to love him, and they got to go to the place that they wanted to and enjoy their last moments.
Nathan passing away – I felt for him. But he got to do it in the arms of the person that he loved. That’s not something that he thought he would get to do – see her again.
Nora ends up in Montreal, the place that she and Nathan wanted to live. She’s content, and she seems at peace.
Things may even get better when someone places the second download of Nathan on her iPad. Will she download him again? Not sure. You see, the story ends there, and we’re left with, and we don’t know what will happen. But we’re here for it.
ALEESHA
My favorite character in this show is Aleesha, and yes, I know I have said that before. She really shines in this episode, though. The woman is insanely smart. The woman is a force.
And she’s not going to let Lakeview go down without a fight.
Her boss may just be thinking about how AI can make money, but Alessha is thinking about how she can save the people in Lakeview. You see, their protocol is that if AI takes over, they wipe Lakeview.
She’s not going to let that happen.
Aleesha may not outright say that she has feelings for Luke, but we all know that she does. Her love language has to be acts of service, because she manages to get Luke a message about what is going to happen.
Right when you think that it will be okay for Aleesha and Luke, he sees the bad AI almost get more power, and decides to stop it. Unfortunately, this means Luke is shoved into the torrent and is gone forever.
I think that killed Aleesha inside.
She’s now a super spy, and well,I love that for her.
INGRID & FAKE NATE
We all know that Ingrid has long been obsessed with Nathan. Now that she’s married to him, she’s willing to go even further to make sure that he’s with her. Ingrid is not anyone that I would want to be, but hey, I can confidently say that we all can learn from her and her perseverance.
Fake Nathan sees Luke go out of his tube (it helps them download from Lakeview) to stop AI. He shows that he’s got muscles and manages to crawl out.
When he sees Luke pushed into the Torrent, I think that is a lot for him to take. That was his bestie. Nathan has been through a lot – and this Nathan remembers when the real Nathan “died” in front of his eyes.
I appreciated that between him and AI Guy, they were able to stop the bad AI and save the AI peeps that he was absorbing.
AI guy had made his way to the real world and is kind and wants to heal and help. He agrees to go back to Lakeview and help.
Everyone who saved the souls in Lakeview is a good thing. AI being able to regenerate – not a good thing.
Upload feels like a cautionary tale for what computers and technology may be one day. It had its mixture of love, romance, and family – but ultimately, I feel like it’s a cautionary tale.
It wasn’t our favorite ending, but it wasn’t bad. It just was.
And I do believe the way they ended it was perfect for the show.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Luke was the best bestie
- Ivan marrying the vacuum.. no, just no
- AI running Lakeview as a not-for-profit – I like
- Ingrid pregnant? Ya her a mom? Well…
