Alien: Earth Season 1 Episode 6 “The Fly” is the kind of episode where you throw your hands up into the air while cackling because you knew this was coming. You predicted it. And here we are! Because from the very beginning I commented on the hubris of humans and how that would be the end of them. And here we are!
Boy Kavalier has created life in the form of these hybrids because he wanted to talk to somebody that matched his intelligence. But he did that by taking children’s minds and putting them in indestructible bodies and giving them access to the world’s knowledge. That’s a recipe for disaster. Things get even worse when you come to realize, they gave them free will and didn’t put safeguards to ensure that they wouldn’t hurt humans.

The last part in particular goes to show you that Boy Kavalier was not ready for what was coming. Because we learned in “The Fly” that there’s an upcoming showcase where they’re going to display the hybrids. And if you want to do that, you have to make sure that said hybrids are in agreement with you. The only way you do that is by putting safeguards. Because you’re not creating life, as much as you try to tell yourself that. You’re creating a product.
Right now, Boy Kavalier’s product is going rogue.
First you have Wendy ,who has come to understand her own power. She’s over here sitting and talking to the xenomorph like it’s nothing. She’s also told her brother that there’s a possibility that she doesn’t want to leave and go back to a regular life. And it’s because she knows that she’s extraordinary and she’s on the cusp of declaring her independence from her brother, Boy Kavalier, and human existence as a whole.
That last part right there is super scary because that is the danger of creating something similar to human life that isn’t. Just as you think of these hybrids as not being humans, those hybrids can think that they are distinct from humans and can do better than their “cruel” creators. And that’s what Marcy is thinking now. She is smarter, kinder to all of these creatures, and looks out for her people like Nibs. And here I was thinking that Curly was going to be the problem. But it was Marcy.

If you look back at the Alien: Earth official trailer there’s this one scene that shows a bunch of people standing ideally by as the xenomorph destroys the soldiers. I think that’s Marcy and the gang. They have decided that they’re going to take control of this island and protect the creatures there while protecting themselves and their memories. And the only way to protect themselves and those creatures is by killing the humans. Good thing Marcy can talk to the xenomorph then, right?
When it comes to synthetic bodies and lives, the one question I have is about Kush. He’s been watching Marcy talk to the xenomorph. He’s also talked to Hermit about how Marcy isn’t going to return to an ordinary life because she is extraordinary. At the same time, he saw Slightly lure in and lock up the doctor so the facehugger could get him. He’s been moving pieces behind the scenes, little by little, with a goal in mind. And I’m having trouble pinning it down.
On one hand, Kirsch could be doing all of this to lift up the hybrids. They are synthetics like him, just with the minds of children. But he could also be doing this because he hates humans, his creator, just as much as Marcy seems to be feeling right about now. And lastly, he could be doing this because he doesn’t want to become obsolete. And the only way to do that is by making sure that the current model gets decommissioned.

With two episodes left in Alien: Earth Season 1, the destruction of the island is coming. You don’t move all these pieces without major consequences. And that’s what this entire season has felt like, moving pieces with an explosive ending in mind. It’s what TV is meant to be like, rich, memorable, and keeping you on your toes. That’s what Alien: Earth Season 1 is doing. And I don’t know how they could end up with a Season 2, but I would watch it gladly.
Additional thoughts about Alien: Earth Season 1 Episode 6 “The Fly”:

- CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE SHEEP ALIEN!?
- This alien is by far the most intelligent.
- And the creepiest.
- And they have him in a cage where he can see everything?!
- NOPE. One way glass for everyone.
- And it goes back to the hubris of humans. These humans think they’re the top of the food chain and they’re simply not. They’re a food source.
