If Season One of Maxton Hall had us swooning for James Beaufort and Ruby Hall, the Maxton Hall Season 2 trailer just ripped out whatever hope we had and stomped on it—but dare I say, in the best way. Prime dropped the official trailer for Season Two, and it gives us the heartbreak, the betrayal, and the boarding school drama we just can’t seem to get away from.
There’s a lot to unpack, so let’s break down the trailer.
Ruby & James: Love and Betrayal
The trailer wastes no time cutting straight to the heartbreak between Ruby and James. We see them together, happy—until they’re not. My jaw dropped when James kissed Elaine in the pool. As someone who hasn’t read the books, it was shocking, and it seems to be the moment that changes everything in their relationship. Ruby’s face and the way she runs away say all I needed to know.
In Season One, James was her safe space. Now, he’s the one reason he couldn’t possibly be. But if Season One taught us anything, it’s that James isn’t one to let go. He’s in love with her, and from the looks of the trailer, he’s desperate to prove himself to Ruby, to win her back. If you thought Season One was bleeding with tortured angst, get ready—this James seems to be the most vulnerable yet.
The Kiss and the Screams Heard Around the World
Elaine is officially the character I’m screaming at right now. Her kiss with James throws gasoline on a budding fire. It felt calculated, almost like his father couldn’t fathom James being with Ruby and pushed him to stay away. From Season One, we know James acts before he thinks, and the fallout back then was massive—imagine how much bigger it’ll be in Season Two.
Fans everywhere, myself included, audibly gasped when we saw James kiss Elaine in the pool. It’s a classic setup, and I can’t look away.
Maxton Hall and Its Elite World
Beyond the angst and romance, the trailer leans heavily into the familiar world of Maxton Hall: the dark parties, the secrets, the privilege. There’s something intoxicating about the way this show constantly frames wealth and power—it’s both beautiful and terrifying. This season feels darker and moodier, not the sweet, almost fairytale romance of Season One. Their relationship is going to be tested—and broken.
Ruby still seems to feel like an outsider, even if she blends seamlessly into James’s world. The stakes feel higher this time, and we see a James so lost it hurts. The use of CHIHIRO’s song was a perfect placement—the lyrics about losing yourself in a relationship mirror the push and pull of Ruby and James’s love. It’s visual storytelling that hurts so good.
Final Thoughts
The trailer gives us heartbreak, betrayal, and just enough romance and angst to keep us hooked until November. I’m counting down the days, even though I’m devastated at the thought of seeing Ruby and James so unhappy again. The trailer leaves me asking one question over and over: Can Ruby forgive James?
Maxton Hall Season 2 premieres November 7th on Prime Video with the first three episodes, followed by weekly releases every Friday.
