Ghosts Season 5 is right around the corner, with “Soul Custody” set to premiere on October 16 to finally give us a reprieve from the jaw-dropping Season 4 finale. (And also to make matters right in the world again with its wholesome charm.) During this year’s San Diego Comic Con, we learned a few new things about the new season, such as the fact that Trevor’s daughter, Abby, will return, and also that we’ll be getting another ghost backstory. We also know that Utkarsh Ambudkar, who plays Jay, will be directing an episode this year, and given what an incredible joy Rose McIver’s directorial debut, “Ghostfellas,” was, we can be sure this will also be a phenomenal doozy.
More than anything, this season will understandably crank up the angst as Hetty’s demonic husband, Elias, is gunning for Jay’s soul. With all of this in mind, plus a new (and delightful) romance haunting the corridors of Woodstone Mansion, here are five things we’d personally love to see this season.
1. A Bigger Christmas Possession

It’s going to be so hard to top last year’s double Christmas possession in “A Very Arondekar Christmas,” but knowing the creators of this show, what we’ll get in Ghosts Season 5 will surely still bring us joy of some kind. It doesn’t even have to happen during Christmas, but maybe I just selfishly want Jay to see the ghosts again. It’d make for an especially poignant occurrence since Elias’ threats are actually terrifying this time around.
However, if it’s not Jay, maybe a fifth time’s the charm for Bela? While no, we don’t want her to get with Trevor (unless it’s through Hetty and it turns into a chaotic, weird throuple thing, then yes, please), but I do also really want Bela to have her chance to interact with the ghosts somehow. Punam Patel is such a delight every time she’s on screen that more of her in any capacity will be great. Either way, only a show like Ghosts can make a possession fun, so we’ll take an episode however we can.
2. Success For Jay’s Restaurant
Jay finally opening up his restaurant, Mahesh, was one of the best things to happen last season, and given everything he’s gone through to ensure a smooth opening, Jay deserves continued success in it. It’s not only something he deserves, but it’s something his parents and Sam deserve, too. Elias is going to try to mess with it on all fronts, but if it can be the one thing that continues to run smoothly while everything wobbles, then we’ll at least be okay for a little while.
3. More Ghostly Character Development

One of the best parts of Season 4 is how much character development we got with the ghosts in organic depictions that made their character journeys even more rewarding. Hetty learned about her Irish history; Thor got some closure on his abandonment issues; Isaac learned how to be less selfish, Alberta and Sam put on a show together, and Sas got to find his person while understanding what it’s like to make choices that feel right for him.
The reason this show consistently sticks out is because each of the characters are so gorgeously complex and messy. None of them are perfect in any way, but as they learn more about themselves in the afterlife, it makes every beat of the show that much more wholesome. And it’s going to be so exciting to see how they’re challenged in Season 5 while they also do everything in their power to protect Jay.
4. A Wedding
It doesn’t matter whose wedding it is, but it feels like we need another wedding at Woodstone Mansion. I wept all over again during my annual rewatch when Pete “walked” his daughter down the aisle, and it reminded me of how much we actually need to see two of the ghosts taking the steps. Flower and Thor seem like the best bet, considering it’s now been a year since their engagement, but on a show like Ghosts, it wouldn’t be surprising if we get a completely unexpected nuptial, too. We know that Season 5, Episode 2 will be titled “Viking Wedding” but whether it’s the one we’re hoping to see only time will tell.
5. Hetty and Trevor Back Together

We’ll say it every year until it finally happens again, but it’s high time that H-Money becomes canon again. Season 4 finally gave the two of them a chance to talk about what went wrong and simultaneously gave us a new power friends dynamic, so it feels only right for us to finally get our lovers to roommates to friends second chance chaotic romance.
Hetty and Trevor are perfect for each other in every way that matters, and it’s also a bonus that Asher Grodman and Rebecca Wisocky adore the fictional ship just as much as the fans do. It feels earned every time we get even the smallest scene with them, so whether they’re back together or not, it’ll be fun watching them regardless. But we really, really just need them to smoosh their faces back together in Ghosts Season 5. Please and thank you.
