Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 2 ‘Firewall’ picked up in the aftermath of Mickey bringing Skye to talk to police after finding her boyfriend Brandon was murdered. The hour was tense, emotional, and hard-hitting. And left us with a pit in our stomachs because Skye (Amanda Arcuri) officially became a suspect in her boyfriend’s murder. We don’t believe she did anything wrong because she was too shaken up about it all. Instead, we’re keeping an eye on Brandon’s two brothers who are sneaky and stalker-ish. They look like trouble, but we don’t think we’ve met Brandon’s killer yet. Which already adds suspense to the next episode.
Additionally, there was also a case with two teenagers held hostage in a drug deal gone wrong that needed Mickey’s attention as well. Both cases did a fine job keeping us interested in what happened next to our favorite characters, while also giving us a headache on Mickey’s behalf. Because she saved the boys and worked well with her family to make sure Skye was protected while she was away.
If she were a mom with a less stressful job, Mickey would’ve been able to focus entirely on Skye. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Mickey is unable to be selfish with who she gives her focus to when they need her as the Sheriff. While emotions were heavy and priorities had to be shared in Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 2 ‘Firewall’, Mickey tried her best to be both a good Sheriff and a good mom. Admittedly, we’ll say she accomplished both in the end.

Mickey Needed Her Sister

Morena Baccarin’s Mickey Fox only lets her carefully constructed walls fall with those she trusts most. Who happens to be family that she’ll always love, despite what they put her through in the past. That’s how big Mickey Fox’s heart is. She loves hard and completely, even if she doesn’t always want to show it. However, when she does get her guard down, it makes for a scene really important to watch.
Mickey’s disappointment over being kept out of the loop about Brandon’s stealing from her father was apparent when she leaned her head against her older stepsister, Fire Country’s Sharon Leone (Diane Farr), shoulders. Continuously, it’s not only a motive for lawyers to believe Skye is guilty of murder. But it’s yet another time where Skye kept her mother at arm’s length.
When Travis explained to Cassidy that Mickey would never want to show affection at work when they were together, we understood why. She’s protective of her emotions with a shield up at all times. As a woman in the public eye, Mickey wants to be seen as stoic despite loving deeply.
This made her conversation with Sharon so impactful for her character. Because she’s someone she’s known her whole life, who she could trust to love her despite her flaws. It was why Mickey listened when Sharon told her it was all up to Mickey to be a mother first, cop second, when it came to Skye. Which meant being a consistent soft place to land without judgment.

Family Is Everything

Skye needed her mom’s presence and comfort, and for a while, she wasn’t getting it. Because Mickey was on shift despite Skye being in possible trouble, and had to work on the kidnapping case. When she would get her mom to talk to her before, it was her cop voice scolding her like how she acted in Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 1 ‘Pilot‘.
In the past, such interrogation has stopped her from being vulnerable with the one person she should be able to trust the most. So, it’s understandably difficult for Skye to confide in either of her parents, as they have such close relationships with the law.
Skye made the mistake in keeping the secret of Brandon stealing from her grandpa to herself. It may have been wrong, but she didn’t want to worry her parents over something she hoped was nothing. At her core, she just wanted to protect their reputations. Which tells us she thinks of herself as second place in both of their lives.
For that to change, both Mickey and Travis (Christopher Gorham) need to prove her wrong. They’ll need to stand with her in the mess and help her out of it because she’s what matters most to them. Luckily for her, that’s exactly what both parents learned to do by the end of the Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 2 ‘Firewall’. We applaud Mickey especially because her relationship with Skye is rockier than the one she has with Travis.
Skye Needed That Hug from Her Mom

At last, it was an eye-opener of an episode for Mickey. It was Travis who had the better chance to help Skye with Brandon’s case as a lawyer. He’s the one who can comfort his daughter the most by doing his job. Not Mickey. This left her feeling uncertain about her role in Skye’s life as she wasn’t the one most involved in the technicalities.
Mickey couldn’t handle Skye’s case as the Sheriff, which was tough on her. Because when you see your child in pain or trouble, you want to fix it. Mickey couldn’t help Skye as the Sheriff, but helping others with her badge on is what comes naturally to her. So, when she confided in Sharon for motherly advice, she got hit with the hard truth.
It hurt to see that Skye confided in everyone in their family because it proved just how much their relationship needed building. It was eye-opening for Mickey to hear that Skye just wanted her as a mother. Nothing else. Sharon was a safe place for both Mickey and Skye when they needed someone to talk to. Which shouldn’t be an issue in normal circumstances. But it is here when both of them are talking about how the other feels inaccessible. Mickey, who had to take full accountability in fixing their relationship, had taken the first step in hugging her daughter at the end of a hard day. It’s the start of a new beginning between mother and daughter.
