Lizzie and Lyra review 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 6 “Family History.” And even though it was mostly effective as an episode, it wasn’t really a great midseason finale. Probably because it wasn’t meant to be one!

At the heart of it is too much time spent on the opening emergency. Did we really need 4 episodes for that? But there’s also pacing issues. That has been one of the shows biggest problems for the last couple of seasons. Pacing issues that leave character arcs feeling wonky to the point fans are filling in the blanks.
Cast in point: Chimney. We thought he was good to go with being Captain with a sprinkling of doubts. But he went from looking for candidates to wondering if the 118 would accept him to… just accepting it. Where was the in-between?
Then there’s Hen’s supposed illness. It was treated as the moment in the trailer for “Family History.” But we basically got nothing besides the show making a conscious decision to have Hen hide her illness from her own family.
Plus, there are still so many dangling plot threads from last season! Anyone remember Buck supposedly being in love with Eddie? Because we sure do! But at least we got a Buck and Harry training montage?

“9-1-1 Season 9, Episode 6 ‘Family History’ is the kind of midseason finale that doesn’t really feel like a midseason finale. Part of that is that I don’t believe it was planned as such—the first “half” of the season was slated to have at least one more episode, and then the scheduling Gods intervened and… here we are.”
