Angst in a romance is an excellent and welcomed turning point that makes every relationship exciting. Because of this, despite how steamy and addictive their relationship was, when Ghosts broke up Hetty Woodstone and Trevor Lefkowitz, it was easy to trust the path the writers were taking them on. They needed time to grow without each other, in order to potentially come back together, even while they openly flirt and are completely ridiculous in most situations. But since “It’s a Wonderful Christmas Carol,” the whole Trevor and Patience thing has been…strange.
It’s strange because while ridiculous pairings aren’t rare on Ghosts and they’re a large part of the fun, this one simply doesn’t work for what it’s trying to showcase. If we’re to believe that it’s because Trevor needs more growth and to understand the importance of loyalty, he’s not the one who fumbled in that area with Hetty. It was Hetty who sought out Thor, showing that she didn’t value her relationship with Trevor as much as he did.
H-Money Is Too Important For Trevor and Patience to Work as a Couple – Even Temporarily

When the two of them finally talked things through and decided to team up as Power Friends in “Ghostfellas,” it seemed they were finally on their way toward potentially reconnecting as a couple again. Then, there was the whole bit in “Halloween 5: The Mummy” that touched on Trevor’s love of accents, too. The pairing is also one that both Asher Grodman and Rebecca Wisocky continue to tease, so we know they want it, we know it’ll happen again, but it’s hard to understand what this whole relationship between Patience and Trevor is meant to evoke.
“The Others” rightfully focuses on members of Flower’s former cult, trying to enact revenge on her, so it’s a relatively solid episode in upholding the show’s found family vibes, but the relationship curveball legitimately has me scratching my head. It’s in this episode that Trevor also claims that Patience saying she’ll never leave him is the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to him. Really? Because last I checked, plenty of ghosts have said nice things about him.
Will This Arc Help Patience Move On?

Sure, it’s nice to feel genuinely wanted, which is clearly what Patience is feeling, even if her emotions also don’t make sense, but it’s unclear why this is the type of angst the show wants to touch on when the pairing simply doesn’t work. Again, while the inclusion of it in the Christmas episode was hilarious comic relief, the idea that real feelings might be present simply doesn’t work for either of the characters. By default, Trevor is a loyal character. We learned as much about him when the truth about his pants came to the surface, and also because he was the one wanting an exclusive relationship with Hetty. Yet, the dialogue in “The Others” almost implies that it’s because he’s taken aback by Patience’s kindness. Is he sad for her? Or is he sad because he might actually feel something for her? In truth, it’s a bit unclear, which kudos to Grodman for keeping us on the edge of our seats in this regard.
The potential relationship between Trevor and Patience also poses a few questions, like, will this maybe be the thing that finally gets her sucked off? (Writing these words for any other show will always be so hilarious.) Will experiencing a moment of real joy and love be the reason she moves forward? Because what’s also so heartbreaking in the episode is that Patience’s belief that Barbara is her one true friend is also clearly one-sided, considering she tries to hit on Trevor in the same episode.
What started as a hilarious gag is turning into something more serious that could genuinely be good for Ghosts and the endgame relationship, but it could also be heartbreaking for Patience, and that’s not something anyone wants to see. I want wholesome. I want a sweet ending for her. I want our little weirdo puritan ghost to finally feel the joy she’s been robbed of for years and years, but I don’t want it to be with Trevor. It makes very little sense at the moment, but if it does later, I’ll be happy to bite my tongue and give credit where it’s due.
