Everyone is watching Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette. Now, we love it and can’t wait for new episodes every week. Yes, we know what happens and yes, we know it’s a limited series. We’re still going to watch and we’re still going to act like everything is a surprise to us.
We’ve said before that in the show, someone has to have hated Daryl Hannah. Though we don’t know what happened in reality, the show makes us think that she was horrible and that she did John wrong. Maybe she did. Maybe she didn’t. The only people who know what occurred are her and John.
However, Hannah doesn’t like her portrayal in the show. Judging by her statement, she’s pissed.
“The character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John,” Daryl penned for The New York Times. “The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue.”
“I have long believed that engaging with distortion often amplifies it,” Daryl continued. “But a recent tragedy-exploiting television series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette features a character using my name and presents her as me. The choice to present her as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate was no accident.”
She wrote an opinion piece for the times talking asking how Love Story can get away with this. This being the portrayal of her. While we have our opinions, we also know that she is entitled to her feelings. Yet, we also know that this is a dramatization and isn’t necessarily reality.
“I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties,” she added in the piece. “I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial.”
She disputed many things that she feels were untrue about herself in her piece. She then wrote, “I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis’ death to a dog’s. It’s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct — and they are false.”
Daryl wrote, “I’ve endured a number of outrageous lies, crappy stories and unflattering characterizations before. I chose not to battle them but to focus on my work and respect my loved ones by keeping my private life private. But my silence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies.”
Now, while we get why she’s angry, it’s also a dramatization and we’re definitely aware of that. We’re hoping that other people are too.
