A 13-year-old girl disappears…and she’s not the only one. Secrets pile up in The God of the Woods, the new Netflix series based on the novel of the same name by Liz Moore, and no one is ready to learn the truth. Interested? Well, the show is starting to take shape and find its perfect cast. Let’s review who they are and their characters.
The Leads
The God of the Woods takes place in the Adirondacks and, from what it looks like, it follows the same family across different points in time—the Van Laars.
And yeah, nothing about them seems simple. There are secrets there, the kind that don’t just stay in the past. There’s also a big focus on class, on money, on what that kind of power does over time.
Then there’s Barbara. She’s 13, and she disappears from the family’s summer camp. And… yeah, it doesn’t sound like it’s the first time something’s gone wrong around them. There’s that earlier tragedy too, and the two things? They don’t exactly feel separate.
And then you start looking at the timeline, past and present kind of blending into each other, and the whole thing gets a bit messy. The more you sit with it, the less put-together this family seems. The money, the influence… it’s there, sure, but it doesn’t really cover much. If anything, it makes it worse.
And we have our two leads!
In one hand, Maya Hawke—yeah, from Stranger Things—will play “smart and quietly determined” Judy Luptack. Judy is the first female investigator in the male-dominated Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and is assigned to unravel the disappearance of a young girl from a summer camp in upstate New York. She’s ill be a series regular.
In another hand, BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Kerry Condon will be Alice Van Laar. Hardened by the grief of a past family tragedy and trapped in a contempt-filled marriage, Alice “is forced to face the unimaginable when her 13-year-old daughter goes missing.“ She will be a series regular too.
And we can’t want wait to see them work together!
At the moment, no other cast members have been confirmed, but stay tuned for updates when they are available!
The God of the Woods will premiere soon only on Netflix.
