From the beginning, Elle has had one goal: get back to Los Angeles. Seattle was never supposed to be home. It was supposed to be temporary—a stop along the way until she could return to the life she’d planned for herself. So when Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ opens with Elle one step closer to landing the Cosmo internship of her dreams, it feels like everything she’s been working toward is finally falling into place…or not. Ready?
Here we go!
Elle Learns that Leadership Isn’t About Controlling Everything

In Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ something has changed. Without even realizing it, Elle has started building a life she never expected to love. She’s found friends who see her for who she really is, discovered passions she wasn’t looking for, and begun to let down the walls she’d carried with her since arriving in Seattle.
That’s what makes this episode so much more than the one with that kiss. But we”ll start form the beginning.
At first, Elle wants to prove exactly what she’s capable of, so naturally she throws herself into organizing every single detail of the school event. Everything passes through her because she thinks that’s the only way everything will work. The thing is, she’s not trying to control everyone because she’s arrogant. She’s trying to control everything because she’s terrified of failing.
If she can account for every little detail, then nothing can go wrong. Unfortunately, that’s also why everything starts falling apart. Her friends are pushing back because Elle keeps trying to fit everyone into her way of doing things instead of allowing them to contribute in their own way. Add Kimberly deliberately sabotaging the event whenever she gets the chance, and it’s easy to understand why Elle feels like she’s losing control in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge.’
But, ironically, losing control is exactly what she needs. And the person who helps her realize that it’s…Shannon. And we love that! We love that the series refuses to reduce Shannon to the obstacle standing between Elle and Miles. Time and time again, she proves why Elle considers her such a good friend, and this episode is another perfect example.
So, Shannon helps Elle understand that leadership isn’t about making everyone do things your way, it’s about trusting people enough to let them be themselves. And the moment Elle stops trying to micromanage every decision, everything changes. Her friends begin working together instead of around her.
And, most importantly, in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ Elle discovers she enjoys Seattle. Somewhere along the way, the school event stopped being another item on her résumé and became more. She wants it to succeed because she cares about the people standing beside her and because she’s proud of what they’ve built together.
Without noticing, Elle has stopped counting the days until she can leave Seattle. Instead, it feels like home.
Eva Doesn’t Understand that Elle Changed

As exciting as Elle’s personal breakthrough is in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge,’ it also makes the growing conflict with Eva inevitable. The more comfortable Elle becomes in Seattle, the harder it is to pretend she still wants exactly what she wanted a few months ago.
The problem is that Eva never notices the change. Or perhaps she refuses to. She follows Elle around with her camera, determined to capture every milestone for the Cosmo application, constantly reminding her that Los Angeles is waiting just around the corner. From Eva’s perspective, she’s encouraging her daughter to pursue the dream they’ve always shared.
From Elle’s perspective, though, it feels completely different. Every time her mother turns on that camera, it’s as if she’s telling Elle that everything happening in Seattle—the place she’s finally starting to feel she belongs—isn’t real. All of it becomes reduced to material for an application, almost like she’s performing a role instead of living her life.
That’s why Eva interrupting Elle’s moment with Miles in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ hurts her—and us—so much. Because, once again, she refuses to see what’s happening right in front of her. Elle isn’t pretending anymore. This is her life now.
And what makes everything so heartbreaking is that Elle realizes that Eva isn’t pushing the Cosmo internship because it’s what’s best for Elle. She’s doing it for herself. She hates the life circumstances have forced upon their family, and returning home has become the only future she can imagine. Elle’s internship represents the perfect opportunity to make that happen, so she’s clinging to it with everything she has.
The problem is that, in doing so, she’s stopped listening to the one person whose future is actually at stake: Elle. And in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ Elle finally says the words she’s been afraid to admit—even to herself.
She likes Seattle. She feels like she belongs. And she’s tired of pretending otherwise, even with her mother. And we’re so proud of Elle right now!
Dustin Finds his Way Back to Elle, But Miles Keeps Making the Same Mistake

After everything that happened in the last episode, in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ Dustin knows exactly where he stands with Elle. He broke her trust. It doesn’t matter that he believed exposing Principal Anderson was the right thing to do. The fact is, he looked Elle in the eye, promised he wouldn’t do it, and then did it anyway.
Now he has to earn back something that isn’t easily repaired.
And what we love about Dustin in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ is that he never acts as though Elle owes him forgiveness. He misses her, first and foremost, as his friend. Of course, by this point, it’s becoming impossible to ignore that his feelings go much further than friendship, no matter how many excuses he keeps making.
He likes Elle. He loves her determination, the way she refuses to give up no matter how difficult things become. He admires her kindness, her heart, and the way she throws herself into helping other people without expecting anything in return. Most of all, he loves how brightly she shines without even realizing she does.
He can keep insisting they have nothing in common. But even Liz isn’t buying it anymore. Neither are we. Thankfully, Dustin eventually manages to rebuild that fragile trust. Elle recognizes that he’s genuinely sorry for hurting her, and that’s enough for them to start finding their way back to each other. And we’re celebrating!
The same can’t be said for Miles.
When Shannon tells Elle that she and Miles have broken up, our first reaction was…confusion. Because why wasn’t Miles the one who ended the relationship? The show made it obvious that his feelings for Elle have grown into something he can’t ignore. Unlike Elle, who has spent the entire season trying to stay away from him out of loyalty to Shannon, Miles has continued looking for every opportunity to be close to Elle.
That’s exactly why his behavior in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ frustrates us. If he’d already reached the point where his heart wasn’t fully in his relationship anymore, Shannon deserved honesty. And yeah, we understand that Miles is confused. But avoiding difficult conversations isn’t the solution.
Elle Finally Stops Fighting her Feelings

That’s why, in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ even after learning Miles is single, Elle refuses to let herself cross the line. As far as she’s concerned, he’s still her friend’s ex-boyfriend. That still make him off-limits.
She keeps trying to convince herself that staying away is the right thing to do, but the truth is that every moment they share in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ makes that task more impossible. The attraction between them has become undeniable, and neither of them is particularly good at hiding it anymore. But after that almost-kiss they should run in different ways. Because, again, it’s the right thing to do.
But then it comes the argument between Elle and Eva. And everything changes.
After spending Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ choosing what everyone else expects from her, Elle finally reaches her limit. She’s exhausted from trying to be perfect, from carrying everyone’s expectations on her shoulders, from constantly doing the “right” thing even when it’s tearing her apart. So she stops thinking. She goes to Miles…and kisses him.
The moment is every bit as magical as we’d imagined. It’s Elle’s first kiss, the kiss she’s dreamed about. A lot of stolen glances, almost-confessions, and suppressed feelings come crashing down all at once. You can almost feel the relief between them. It’s like opening a floodgate neither of them had the strength to keep closed anymore.
For one beautiful moment, everything feels exactly as they’d hoped it would. Then reality catches up. They betrayed Shannon. And that’s something Elle can’t hide from herself. She made a mistake. A huge one. But we understand her because she’s human. After an emotionally exhausting day, after fighting with her mother, after spending weeks denying every feeling she had, in Elle Season 1 Episode 4 ‘I’m Not Afraid Of A Challenge’ she finally broke.
That doesn’t justify what happened. But it does help us understand how Elle got there. That’s why we’re proud that Elle wants to tell everything to Shannon, no matter how painful the consequences might be. But it’s to late. Shannon’s mother has died. How can Elle possibly tell Shannon the truth now? But how can she keep hiding it?
It’s an impossible situation with no painless answer, and it leaves us desperate to see how Elle can possibly move forward without hurting someone she loves even more than she already has.
PS: It’s interesting that Eva was offered a position in the campaign.
PS2: Something definitely happened between Liz and Kimberly…
