Blumhouse Atomic Monster, the home of horror, offered fans plenty of first looks, surprises and giveaways at its packed BlumFest panel at the 2026 New York Comic Con. But one of the best things, at least for this fan of horror, is the first official trailer for Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs.
Starring Scarlett Johansson, the upcoming Exorcist tells the story of Julie Miller, an NYPD detective who rose to prominence after bringing down a notorious serial killer played by John Leguizamo. His killings were very religious crime scenes. Problem is, a copycat killer emerges. And these crime scenes, they’re being staged in a way to get her attention.
In the official trailer, the terror we’re going to face in The Exorcist: Martyrs is set from the very first scene, Johansson walking down some very creepy stairs. After all, if framed right, stairs are always ominous. And that’s especially true for The Exorcist franchise. That’s followed by strange killings, Julie’s son being creepy in the middle of the night, and then Julie herself telling her son, “I’d appreciate it if you didn’t call me that.” while looking very odd…
Joining Johansson for Flanagan’s film are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane. And Ejiofor appeared alongside Flanagan at NYCC 2026 to talk about the film. Flanagan himself said that The Exorcist: Martyrs is the scariest film he’s ever done. “This movie is so goddamn scary, I swear to God. I could feel it on set. It was freaking me out in the chair, like off the monitor. But yeah, I really hoped this would be the scariest thing I ever got to work on. And it absolutely is.”
As for Ejiofor, who plays Father William, he joined Martyrs because he read the script and actually got scared. At the panel he said, “I was reading it thinking, “I’m alone in a house. Where are the exits? So it was a completely different experience. […] And working with Mike, you know we’ve had a great time working together before.”
