Young Han Solo film lets go of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller won’t be directing the young Han Solo movie, after all.

The duo, whose previous projects include The LEGO Movie, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and the 21 Jump Street comedies have parted ways with Lucasfilm over, guess what? Creative differences.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Whoever takes over will inherent a project that started filming in February, and that has, presumably, already shot a great deal of footage, which is an unusual situation for a director, to say the least.

The screenplay for the movie was written by Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).

The cast is comprised of Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as an as-yet-unnamed mentor, Emilia Clarke as mystery character and Tandie Newton as …well, yet another mystery character. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is reported to be playing a performance-capture character.

The movie is expected to follow Han Solo before he met up with Luke Skywalker and became part of the Rebellion, though no actual details on the plot have been released.

The as-of-yet untitled Han Solo movie is still set to be released May 25, 2018.
