‘Wynonna Earp’ SDCC 2017 Interview: Melanie Scrofano, the Pregnant Hero We Need

Melanie Scrofano, the lead of Syfy’s Wynonna Earp, sat down with us at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about Season 2 of the hit series and the groundbreaking way that EP Emily Andras wrote in her real life pregnancy. (She also talked about rat smoothies, but that’s for later!)

Other shows would’ve royally screwed up having it’s lead pregnant. They would’ve put her in a coma, used a wide variety of objects to block her stomach, or had an unexplained absence because…you know…TV doesn’t know what to do with pregnant characters.

That’s where Wynonna Earp is different.

The first thing that Emily Andras, the executive producer, told Scrofano was, “You have hilarious timing.” Wynonna wasn’t initially set to be pregnant during Season 2, but she told Scrofano, “You know what? If we write it in, it could be really cool because you’re gonna be going through so much.”

The timing ended up being perfect as Scrofano gave birth only days after they wrapped the season up and there’s been a positive response from the fans at the news of Wynonna’s pregnancy and the fact that the show wasn’t just going to brush it off.

Wynonna is pregnant. Melanie is pregnant. And that just makes it even better because this is an honest portrayal of what is to be pregnant, ugly bits included. And to those who thought she couldn’t do it, being pregnant on set or having the lead being pregnant, Melanie’s calling “bullshit.”

“I, Melanie, was working 18 hour days. I’d get up. I’d learn my lines. I’d cry. I’d go to work. I’d cry, have a meltdown. I’d yell at someone. I’d go apologize. And then I’d keep going. Wynonna does the same thing.”
