‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ 6×03 Review: The Tattler, Getting Kinky, and Bisexual Woes

Brooklyn Nine-Nine just lost a star, an icon, an inspiration, to bigger and greater things in “The Tattler.” Gina Linetti, the rascal of the Nine-Nine is saying goodbye for now as the actress moves on in a different direction in her career. We’ll miss our Paris of people but remember everything she’s taught us over the years, like how to look like a French wizard, how to stand up to Pimento, and ruling the Nine-Nine on the sly because if people knew how smart Gina is, it would be harder to control them.

“The Tattler” also saw Amy and Rosa, my ride or dies now that Gina is gone *starts crying*, being unapologetically themselves. Amy was letting her kinky freak flag fly. And Rosa went to Charles for help in deciding something in her bisexual life. Women, expressing their feeling, needs, and wants without being judged? Oh yes, please! Give us more of that, stat!

Goodbye Gina Linetti

The end is here! Beware all that love the Paris of people! Gina Linetti is stepping away from the Nine-Nine and nothing will be the same! Rationally, I know she’s not gone forever. I do read up on my entertainment news on a daily basis. But it hurts that she won’t be around as a regular and that the desk in front of Captain Holt’s office will be Gina-less.

So, let’s talk about the things we love about Gina Linetti that we’re going to miss.

We’re gonna miss Gina’s honesty and the way she told you how it is even if you don’t want to know the cold hard truth. We’re gonna miss Gina being a rascal and causing all sorts of trouble with Terry’s passwords. And we’re gonna miss how Gina Linetti is unapologetically herself. It’s honestly what I admire most about this character. Yes, she’s a PITA often, but the way she’s unapologetically weird, loud, and over the top, feels liberating for someone like me who thinks I have to fit in a box to fit in with those around me.

I don’t have to be like everyone else. I don’t have to follow the rules set out for me. I can take my mind, my smarts, my weirdness, and my perseverance and make something wonderful and uniquely me. I can be the Paris of my city or just the Paris of my home. Point is, everything I’ve learned from Gina Linetti will always be with me. After all, isn’t Gina Linetti a state of being? He, she, we are all Gina Linetti.

Amy Santiago, You Are Kinky AF

I’m loving this kinky side of Amy Santiago. She’s always had a kink for authority and I remember being genuinely weirded out when she told Jake he could save that voice for later on in bed. But season six Amy…there’s something different about her. At first I thought it was her marriage. She’s got Jake on lock-down and she can let her freak flag. Problem is, Amy has never been shy about how nerdy and weird she is.

The more that I think about it, maybe it’s the network change that has allowed Amy to be a little more liberated in what she finds hot and kinky. Maybe NBC went like, “Fuck it. Women have appetites. We won’t make them feel guilty for it or attribute it only to Rosa because she’s an assertive AF woman.” Amy has sexual appetites. Amy has wants and needs. She does. And it’s kind of mind blowing when you really look at it.

Our needs as women are always seen as secondary or completely dependent on the man in the relationship. This Amy Santiago isn’t like this and maybe she hasn’t been like that for a while and it took me this long to notice. Amy knows what she wants and she lets Jake know that perfect attendance records and science projects get her going cuz she’s a nerd and she knows it. It’s liberating, amazing, and something I need to see more of in this show and every other one out there!

Rosa and Her Bisexual Woes

I’m not gonna lie to you, when Rosa first presented her problem about which two people to date, I was miffed. Yes, Rosa is assertive AF and knows what she wants when it comes to sex, but do we really need another hyper-sexual bisexual? No, we don’t. And that’s what I thought they were doing with Rosa.

Thank God I kept watching and gave the show a chance to explain or not fall into the same pitfalls that other shows do when it comes to their bisexuals, which I am.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Rosa, and Charles, treated this bisexual choice with the same respect they would’ve given this issue if this was a hetero situation Rosa was dealing with. This normalization of what Rosa was going through, the way it was treated by Boyle like it was just another day, matters so much to someone like me who sees bisexuals as the other when they are on TV.

If anything, I feel like it was HUGE that Rosa came to Boyle and asked for advice in the first place. She came out as bisexual because Charles caught her on the phone. Rosa didn’t have to say anything there but she did because she trusts him. Because of the manner he dealt with it and how he respected her, she found it easier to come to him with the problem that she was dealing with.

At the end, it just turned out to be two friends that were making a pros and cons list named after grains, of all things! And like Amy Santiago and her sexual appetites, writing a bisexaul Rosa that is treated like anyone else at the precinct, is important AF for female representation in the media we consume. Everything that Brooklyn Nine-Nine is doing right now in season six feels like a shift in a more open, honest, and real portrayal of its female characters. AND WE LOVE IT!
