Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action remake has just gotten even better. Possibly.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harry Styles is in talks to play Prince Eric in the live-action remake and we are on board. If you are not familiar with Harry Styles, he’s from a band that you may know: One Direction. He isn’t just known for that though; he’s forged his own solo career and just last year completed several sold out shows on his first solo tour.
Lets break down why we think he should be Prince Eric:
GOLDEN VOICE
In the film version of The Little Mermaid, Eric doesn’t sing. However, in the Broadway show, he does. Golden opportunity here for Disney to add a fresh take to a classic.
Harry has a beautiful voice and can convey a range of emotion with his music. Halle Bailey who was cast as Ariel, also has a powerful voice so I can just imagine how incredible a duet between those two would be. New music for the live action The Little Mermaid? We can dream big, and we’re doing just that.
We know Disney took chances with The Lion King, and we can only hope that no matter who plays Prince Eric, they take chances with The Little Mermaid also.
HIS LOCKS
Face it, folks. Harry has some amazing hair. It’s been a topic in fandom for what seems like forever. Fan fiction has been written about his hair. When he cut his hair – well, that was the day that the internet cried.
RIP Harry’s hair. Let us never forget.
The money shot was trying to get a picture of him with his hair short, long before his Dunkirk debut.
We’re very aware that anyone can grow out their hair and that there are wigs available everywhere, but we also know that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. And selfishly, we’re hoping for the return of the long locks of Harry Styles’ past to make a return.
STYLE
There is no shame in Harry’s style game. He rocks any look, and is not afraid to try new things. I am confident he can wear the hell out of Eric’s white shirts and tight pants (his love for skinny jeans? need I say more?).
If you have seen Harry on a red carpet, then you know he can do it up with flair. I’ve got two words for you: Chelsea boot. If you’ve been here since 1D days, you know Harry loves his Chelsea boots. Prince Eric rocks boots and we know Harry can so, winning combo.
There isn’t much that Styles can’t pull off and we’re pretty positive that Disney will have an amazing costume designer for the film. So, Harry in those Prince Eric pants and that low plunging shirts… I’ll take it. Now, one can only hope that Prince Eric has tattoos.
I guess if they want to cover those though, we’ll survive.

HE CAN ACT
Oh, you didn’t know Harry could act? Well you must not have seen Dunkirk then. Harry’s first acting gig was in the 2017 Christopher Nolan film, and although his role was small, it was memorable. I’ll just let that speak for itself. See the video below –
HE’S HOT
Did you really think I wasn’t going to add his looks to this list? Harry is HOT. That’s my opinio,n and the opinion of millions. He’s charming and sweet but he also has a fierceness and innocence to him.
Harry has a genuine love for the world around him, and it would be intriguing to see him have an arrogance about him, and then for love to break that in the role of Prince Eric. I think that we’ve all watched his relationships unfold in the tabloids, but it would only cause us to dream about him more if we can see his face in a love story on the screen.
INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIP? YES PLEASE
It’s about time that Disney depicted real life – even in fairytales. We’re totally aware that some people didn’t like Halle Bailey’s casting, but we believe that it was an amazing choice. Now, with the possibility of an interracial relationship, we gotta say we’re absolutely here for it. Love should see no color or gender, and the fact that the world will be able to see that on a Disney level. YES, PLEASE.
This isn’t about an animated movie, this is about the acceptance of the evolving world and the fact that people deserve to see themselves on screen, no matter the story. It’s about little girls and boys looking up and being able to find themselves on screen, see their parents on screen, and so on. And no matter who gets the role (though sure, we’re holding out for Harry), we hope that Disney continues to make strides in representation for all their movies.
The world needs it and we’ll support it. We hope you would too.
BUILT IN FANDOM
Yes, I know that The Little Mermaid has it’s own built in fandom. But, Harry does too. Fandoms colliding is never a bad thing.
Regardless, The Little Mermaid will have filled in theaters. But the true test of any movie is not the people that go and see it once. It’s the people that go see the same movie ten times or more. The One Direction fandom is fiercely loyal. They’ll be those people.
The moment those tickets go on sale, they’ll be the people buying multiple showings. Mark our words.
