I now watch every trailer that comes out, especially for Netflix movies, because in a real way, it feels like streaming services are my friends, my companions, my source of entertainment. So, of course, I jumped at the trailer for Netflix‘s new dance movie, Work It.
And then I cringed. And paused. Watched it again. And then cringed some more.
Because …really?
It’s 2020, and I’m not saying that cause 2020 is good or anything, I’m saying that because I’m just kinda hoping we’re somehow moving forward or something. Except, if we’re still making dance movies that center the white girl who – and let me stress this because it’s super important considering this is a dance movie – CAN’T DANCE, then have we really changed that much?
Not to mention that the black queer kid is apparently the antagonist because he, GASP, doesn’t want to let a mediocre white girl who, AGAIN, can’t dance, into his dance team.
Reaaaaallly? In the year of our Lord 2020?
So yeah, maybe this won’t be the thing helping me pass the time during this quarantine. Or maybe I’ll hate-watch, who knows? Either way, the trailer left me shaking my head, which is absolutely not the reaction Netflix wanted, I’m sure.
Here’s the trailer in case you want to check it out:
What do you think? Will you be giving this a chance?
Work It will be available on Netflix August 7th.
