DC FanDome was full of surprises and new content for fans all around the world. There was plenty of Wonder Woman 1984 content spread out over the 24-hour, immersive event. One fun segment saw the cast go head-to-head in a game called “Werewolf 1984.” Trust me, it’s worth your time. The panel to promote the upcoming film was a perfect start to the festivities, and it even featured a special appearance from Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman on a show with the same title from 1975-1979.
The biggest surprise came at the panel’s end when director Patty Jenkins presented a second trailer for Wonder Woman 1984. Now that we’ve all had a chance to watch the trailer a million and one times, let’s break down some of the details.
The Amazon Olympics
Diana’s life on Themyscira is such a huge part of her. It’s clear through every move Diana makes that the Amazons, her family, are with her. Wonder Woman doesn’t lend much of its time to learning more about the Amazons, because Diana must bring an end to World War I and that takes precedent. This trailer confirms a return to Themyscira to discover much more about the Amazons and their culture, which includes the Amazon Olympics.
This is such a big part of Diana’s lore that it only makes sense for Wonder Woman 1984 to take a closer look at it. From just the scope of what we see in the trailer, WW84 won’t hold back when it comes to the Amazon Olympics. It’s rare enough to see a female-led superhero movie that it feels surreal that there’s going to be one or more sequence dedicated to emphasizing the strength and courage of a group of women. It’s amazing, and we have Patty Jenkins to thank for that.
Max Lord
Thankfully the days of not knowing who Pedro Pascal plays in Wonder Woman 1984 are behind us! Pascal takes on the charismatic and devious Max Lord in the anticipated film. Fans are eager to see his take on the classic character. If this trailer is any indication, Max Lord is up to no good for personal gain. Lord is giving people what they truly desire. There’s plenty to speculate on how he’s doing this, but fans are confident that it has something to do with the Dreamstone. Of course there are unfortunate side effects to such a powerful crystal, but we’ll have to wait until N is in theaters to see that.
Cheetah
One of the biggest reveals from this new trailer is seeing Cheetah in action. Kristen Wiig completely transforms into the feline antagonist. Barbara Ann Minerva is nearly unrecognizable under all the spots and fur. The trailer leaves fans guessing on how Barbara becomes Cheetah, but it does more than hint at Max Lord’s involvement. I hope that there’s more Cheetah in WW84 than just this scene, because this is AMAZING.
Wondertrev
It’s hard not to be a little skeptical about Steve Trevor’s return knowing completely impossible wishes are coming true. Their love is clearly destined, which makes the prospect of heartbreak all the more painful. However, that doubt fades away as soon as Diana and Steve meet again. Steve and Diana are such a complementary couple, they fit together like puzzle pieces. Their dynamic is so perfect, because it’s obvious that Diana doesn’t need a boyfriend. Though, she deserves a great love and that is Steve Trevor. These two are written in the stars, no matter how time and space tries to keep them apart. If we’re this emotional about the content from the trailer, imagine the state we’ll be in after we see in the movie in October.
Diana’s Life Since Wonder Woman
Diana’s life has changed quite a lot from her days fighting alongside the soldiers. Needless to say, this trailer also shows that Diana is still grappling with her grief over losing Steve and her friends who aren’t immortal. Wonder Woman 1984 finds Diana working at the Natural History Museum in Washington D.C.. Fans of the DCEU know that Diana isn’t a stranger to museums. She was an antiques dealer in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She works at the Louvre Museum in 2017’s Justice League. Diana’s dedication to remembering and respecting others extends into her day job.
Wonder Woman vs Cheetah
The first Wonder Woman 1984 trailer offers a different look at Barbara and Diana’s relationship. It shows the women as friends or at least friendly. This trailer offers a different presentation of their dynamic. This is exciting because it means that there will be a journey for Barbara and Diana. It’s much too easy to do a terrible job at developing female characters and pit them against each other for no reason. WW84 looks like it could defy those misogynistic tendencies and develop the women as characters, separately and together. It’ll be interesting to see what changes between Barbara and Diana to cause such a massive shift in their dynamic. Friends to enemies isn’t a new concept, but I have hope that Wonder Woman 1984 will bring a unique twist to it.
Steve’s New Look
Steve’s makeover comically parallels Diana’s from the first film. Well, Steve isn’t physically hindered by any restrictions of gendered clothing like Diana, but you get the point. Though, there’s an extra layer of hilarity when you think about how Steve Trevor dresses a lot like Chris Pine now. Can we talk about the American flag fanny pack and the parachute pants? Beyond just the clothing, it’s a fun twist to see Steve be the fish out of water and let Diana be his guide. Their roles are reversed and that revives the story. Ugh, I can’t get enough!
Diana’s New Look
Diana has wings! Fanatics will recognize her new look as the Golden Eagle armor. My jaw hit the floor when this look was revealed in the last trailer. That didn’t change this time around. It’s gorgeous and powerful. Who said a woman can’t be both at the same time? Diana Prince is one among many women ready to prove them wrong! Not only that, Diana doesn’t have her sword or shield. CinePop shared a video of Gal Gadot speaking about the change at CCXP. Diana looks like she’s getting by just fine with her gauntlets and lasso. You can see Diana using her lasso to swing from lightning bolts in the trailer. She’s got this, with or without the sword and shield.
