One of my favorite tropes is when people find each other again after faking that they they were together in order to not be alone due to someone else’s relationship. And I will call that a trop – don’t come at me.
It’s especially great when they didn’t know that were always meant to be together, but the rest of the world sees that they were meant to be together.
A December Bride fits that and the angst and stares and the love that these two character have for each other has me smiling from beginning to the end.
And it’s beautiful.
Aspiring interior designer Layla O’Reilly is dreading the Christmastime wedding of her cousin who’s marrying Layla’s ex-fiancé. Although Seth Murphy is the one responsible for introducing the bride and groom, she begrudgingly accepts his offer to be her date as she’s out of options. Seth gets carried away at the reception and announces they’re engaged, forcing a mortified Layla to keep up the pretense. But as the faux couple spends more time together they find themselves feeling something very real. Based on the book by bestselling author Denise Hunter.
Lets talk about its cuteness!
THE MAN THAT BLINDLY WILL BE THERE FOR YOU
What I love about A December Bride is Seth. Seth is this rich, preppy man who has the dream of succeeding in business. You would think he’s a douche, but he’s not. He’s the sweetheart who wants to achieve dreams, but also wants to be there for others.
And Layla is the girl that he’s enamored by and he doesn’t blink twice when he needs to pretend to be in a relationship with her. He wants to help her. He wants to see her succeed.
And from the beginning you can see that he likes her. He agrees to all of the things she wants, but you can see that he wants her to notice that he would be there for her. He’s willing to take on whatever to make her happy because he knows that she’s it.
And that blind love gets you going from the start.
THE MAN THAT WILL MAKE YOU SMILE THROUGH HEARTACHE
Look, if my cousin became engaged to my ex, there would be no amount of family peacemaking that would get me to hear her out. I would cut a bitch. Like verbally the girl would wish she never knew me.
I would say that Layla handled this shit like a champ because she didn’t come for her cousin. She gave silent treatment, which to be honest, shows that she is a good person.
Sure, she made up that her and Seth were engaged, but desperate times and all of that.
Seth may have convinced her to decorate his house in return, but I don’t believe that his intentions were bad. He liked her, he needed her, and he wanted to help her.
And I think that how they help each other – even when they don’t know that they are – is endearing. These two have a chemistry that all actors don’t have.
THE WAY YOU MAKE SOMEONE SEE THEIR DREAMS
In the movie, Layla looses her job. She’s wanted nothing more than to be an interior designer and her boss finds out that she’s decorating Seth’s house.
And so she looses her job.
I don’t think that either one of them saw that coming. But Seth wasn’t willing to let her fall flat over this. He made sure that she would be connected to a developer and that he would get her a chance that even her job hadn’t gotten her.
Layla is extremely talented, but a little closed off – not able to see the world in front of her. She is so talented, but her want to please everyone gets in her way.
And he’s gotta pull her out of that.
But what these two is balance each other out and that’s a beautiful thing. They have their dreams in their head, but what they don’t see is that because of the influence they have on each other, their dreams are always changing.
THE WAY YOUR DREAMS CHANGE AND GROW
When they have to fake that they are engaged, and come up with a plan to make that stop – Seth realizes that he loves her. I think he’s always known. But for Layla, she hasn’t seen how worthy she is to live and not exist.
These two have forced each other to be better. They allow each other to see that they are meant for amazing things.
To see all the amazingness and just what the title means, you’re gonna need to watch the movie. And it will be worth your time.
It will put you in the mood for Christmas and for love. Hell with this year, it’s perfectly acceptable to just start putting up your Christmas decorations now.
