His Dark Materials “The City of Magpies” saw Lyra and Will joining forces in an effort to figure out what the hell is going on in the new world they’ve just arrived in. And from Lyra being unapologetically herself to Will being the sweetest, this first episode taught us a lot. Join us in celebrating the first episode of season 2 of His Dark Materials with 10 life lessons we learned from “The City of Magpies”!
1. Omelette’s don’t need egg shells
Will is the kind of person that will eat Lyra’s hot mess of an omelette and not complain about. Well, not complain about it much. He’s kind, considerate, and the complete opposite of how I’d react. I wouldn’t eat it. Why? Because omelettes don’t need egg shells.
2. You don’t need to pay in a deserted world
Another thing that I really like about Will is how polite he is. He doesn’t have to leave money for services rendered or food consumed. But here he goes being the sweetest goober leaving foreign money at an establishment. Would we have done it? No. But Will’s special. We’ll allow it.
3. Showers are mandatory during adventures
Sorry not sorry, but you stink, Lyra. And I know that you live a wild life where showers are at the bottom of the totem pole. But you still need a shower every once in a while, especially when even Pan can smell you and complain. You have time, Lyra. Shower first, adventure second.
4. Read all letters ASAP
I understand that Will needed time to process his feelings and the entirety of the situation he’s in. But that doesn’t mean he should leave important letters to the last minute. You need to read important letters and notes ASAP, especially if they could possibly help you out in the future.
5. Don’t read things in a creepy area
No one, and I really mean NO ONE, should read things in a creepy area. I mean, if you have no other option, go ahead with your bad self. But Will had a choice and he chose a creepy and barely lit place to have a moment. Danger zone, passenger for one and his name is Will.

6. Don’t trust a woman with tweezers
I know that we’re conditioned to let some random lady wax our eyebrows every full moon to avoid looking like a wolf. But if His Dark Materials has taught me anything it’s to not trust a woman with tweezers, especially sharp looking ones like Ms. Coulter has. It’s a no for us.
7. Ask your magical device all the things
Do not, and I can’t stress this enough, ignore the magical device you have because you’re mad. The magical device did nothing wrong and you’re stuck in quite a pickle, Lyra. Use that bad boy, get the information that you need, and try to find a way out of the situation you and Will are in.
8. Trust in Lin Manuel Miranda
Love or hate Scorsby, we trust in Lin Manuel Miranda to make sure that the journey his character is on will lead him closer to Lyra. Sure, he might not have any idea where she is and resources are scarce, but we trust in this journey and know they will eventually be reunited.
9. Mrs. Coulter is a bad bitch
Mrs. Coulter is the baddest bitch around. And this isn’t me cheering her on. She’s a bad guy, after all. But damn it if she doesn’t steal every scene that she’s in thanks to the amazing talent of Ruth Wilson. Really can’t wait to see more of her and what she’s up to!
10. Witches are bad bitches too
The witches have a couple tricks up their sleeves and proved that they are bad bitches/witches in their own right. They know that the world is about to change in huge ways and they won’t risk it. Even if it means killing one of their own, their family, just in case.
His Dark Materials airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
